Sports bra saves US hiker in German Alps

BERLIN (AP) — An American hiker stranded in the Bavarian Alps for nearly three days was rescued after using her sports bra as a signal, police in southern Germany said Monday.

Berchtesgaden police officer Lorenz Rasp said that he helped lift 24-year-old Jessica Bruinsma of Colorado state to safety by helicopter on Thursday after she attracted the attention of lumberjacks by attaching her sports bra to a cable used to move timber down the mountain.

"She's a very smart girl, and she acted very resourcefully," said Rasp. "She kept her shirt and jacket for warmth, but thought the sports bra could work as a signal."

Rasp said the cable was only within reach because the timber transport system was out of service. When a repairman restored the line on Thursday, the cable car started moving up the mountain and Bruinsma's bra reached the worker at the base. He knew of the missing hiker and immediately called police.

1. This well-celebrated woman ... is a knucklehead.
Maybe it's regional pride, but a Colorado woman who runs marathons shouldn't have been caught by fast-moving weather in the Alps.

Just like the Rockies, you take into account weather changes fast. Shorts and a light jacket? She should've known better :eyes:

That said, glad things worked out.

8. She fell over the edge of a cliff. She wouldn't have been caught be the weather
if she hadn't fallen off the edge of the cliff. And she was with a friend.

22. "If I hadn't twisted my ankle, I'd have been able to get off the mountain."
Planning for that is part of heading into the backcountry. I'm sorry it happened to her, but "resourceful" is a poor choice to describe her.

24. I would save my anger for the person with whom she was walking.
Why that person wasn't able to get help back to her quickly is the mystery.

But I guess we should blame the Colorado woman for not having the foresight and resourcefulness of finding better hiking companions.

5. Was the woman white? Was she blonde?
if the answer to both of those questions is yes, then that explains how this became the #1 news story of the day.

9. SEXY. Add in the SEXY sports bra and it's a wonder it doesn't trigger a Russert-a-thon.
One day...something like this WILL. The trend is quite obvious.

SEXY baby. SEXY.

13. Exactly - how boring
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 10:24 AM by Baclava
Now if she were sliding down a mountain and ripped off her bra and snagged a rock to save her from plunging off a cliff----with helicopters in the air filming the whole thing - THAT would be exciting.

Any mention of Sex sells, I guess.

11. It's a worthy story because of what it might teach about resourcefulness
Perhaps someone else, having read it, will also be able to think outside the box if they get into life-threatening trouble.

20. If it was a guy...he would of died.
1. Most guys only take off their underwear for sex or when they can't stand them anymore.
2. If he did put his underwear up there it would of been another "random" appearance of dirty mens underwear in the woods. (yuk)
3. Volunteers fall over themselves to hopefully find the topless lost female "hottie". Imagine them saying "Who wants to go look for the owner of this underwear?" - crickets...

23. Nothing attracts attention like a bra!
I wonder if a t shirt or a sock or even a jock strap would have gotten the same attention.
