7. What Happened?
Iowa and New Hampshire happened. Good move, but not very much time. Gore and Kerry both changed campaign managers to their benefit.

16. I'm worried the move is too late though
They've only got one week before the second biggest primary day. Dean needs to win a state or two next Tuesday, so how is the new guy going to be able to get it together in such a short period of time?

19. Media genius? Trippi wrote the Gephardt attack ads.
Yeah... that was REAL genius. NOT.

More like a nationally televised murder-suicide pact.

21. Not even close
Trippi is wonderful and I adore him (tho not on TV  )

But the campaign needs someone who is also an executive type. I think Trippi is a visionary and a genius, but has some failings in the managerial and implementation phases. I don't fault him -- but I'm glad the Governor has the guts and insight to take the whole thing further now.

I'm THRILLED that Trippi isn't leaving. That would be a mistake, IMO. We need him, but we also need some skills and talents he's a little short on. IMO.

23. Nope...Long overdue.
There's a few people that saw the writing on the wall with Trippi and quietly melted into the background about the end of the 2nd quarter '03.

There were a lot of brilliant people onboard with the Dean campaign very, very early. When Trippi started telling the press he was responsible for almost every innovation the Dean campaign came up with, there were A LOT of people who had month and months worth of work get credit stripped from them. People that were looking for nothing more than someone to say "thanks." When Trippi pulled what he did, a lot of talented people simply disappered. They didn't cause trouble, but they did stop working.

14. Wonder about that fee schedule he was operating on:
low (no?) salary, just a cut of the tv budget.

If Dean really only has 5 million or so left, it means that Trippi got a big cut of that.

I presume that that contract's torn up and trippi isn't getting the TV money anymore.

I wonder if keeping him on was something trippi bargained for so that he'd have a job, or something Dean bargained for so that this wouldn't be spun to badly against Dean.

15. DJ Dean/Campaign-3: Conflicting Reports On Trippi's Status
MSNBC reported that Trippi will continue to run Dean's very successful
Internet campaign fund-raising program.
Other sources told Fox News and The Associated Press that Trippi was leaving
the campaign entirely.

17. What happened? Trippi was source of "Trippi genius" comments.
Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 05:34 PM by mouse7
Trippi was the primary source of most of the pro-Trippi propaganda.

Trippi took credit for Meet-up concept, when a Dean non-staff volunteer developed the "meet-up for politics" concept.

Trippi took credit for bringing blogs to the Dean campaign when blogs had been in use by non-staff Dean volunteers for 6 months beforehand.

Generation Dean was a non-staff Dean volunteer. Women for Dean was a non-staff Dean volunteer.

Using the volunteers to write letters to undecided voters in Iowa was Trippi's idea, but that's about it.

On edit: The one thing Trippi WAS supposed to be good at, media, was a disaster. He clearly didn't create good relations between Dean and the press, and commercials were a disaster. The only good commercial thus far was last week, and it was developed AFTER the Daily Kos was already reporting some people in the Dean campaign had been "benched."

25. Not quite
Dean relied on Trippi for his 'public persona' and Trippi was spread too thin with Ads - day-to-day work - press - etc. You gotta admit, the ads suffered and Dean suffered - his schedule was too full and he's not a 25 year-old - Trippi should stay and keep up with the Ads - let someone else deal with the media and Dean.

22. Howard Dean Replaces His Campaign Manager
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Howard Dean shook up his presidential campaign on Wednesday after absorbing back-to-back defeats, replacing his campaign manager with a longtime associate of former Vice President Al Gore to try and stabilize his faltering candidacy.

"Governor Dean asked Roy Neel to join the campaign CEO and Joe Trippi resigned as campaign manager," said Dean campaign spokeswoman Tricia Enright.

Dean offered Trippi a spot on the payroll as a senior adviser, a source said, but he decided to quit the campaign rather than accept the demotion.

In the call with lawmakers, Dean expressed his determination to remain in the race, and said he hopes to finish at least second in the upcoming round of primaries and caucuses.<snip>

24. That's a bummer. Joe did a fabulous job early on.
He turned an unknown governor from a tiny state into the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in 6 months, and made him the deepest pocketed candidate based on contributions from ordinary Americans.

I wish Joe had decided to stay onboard.

26. Right out of Kerry's play book
Kerry has been stealing everything from Dean so now Dean has taken an idea from Kerry. Changing managers didn't hurt Kerry a bit.

27. A stroke of genious
It puts Howard in the news cycle.

It show the campaign is moving forward, not looking back.

Sheds blame for some of the missteps on the campaign rather than on Dean.

It is such a good idea that Trippi probably thought of it himself!
