STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The United States will release up to two dozen prisoners it considers to be a low security threat from its Guantanamo Bay military base, the U.S. special ambassador for war crimes said Wednesday.

<snip>

Around 660 suspected Taliban and al Qaeda members have been held at the Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba since they were captured during the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan (news - web sites), which began after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. Prosper said about 80 deemed no threat to security were released last year.

The detentions without trial have drawn worldwide criticism from governments and human rights groups concerned about the prisoners' legal status and the conditions in the camp.

Prosper said the prisoners to be released were of low or no security threat.

YEAHHH!!! We are such a great country!! We hold people without charges for over two years when they are no security threat!!! That's America!! Go Team!!

1. Most likely no one in Guantanamo is guilty of anything
Have they had any trials?

This was spectacular overreaction to 9/11 brought about to show that bush was "doing something". It is sad that those prisoners had to get caught up in it.

6. Do you really think
that if there are ever trials that they wont be rigged to insure guilty verdicts and then allowed no judicial review.

3. Two dozen?
Is that kinda like twenty four of our fellow human beings?

Insensitive, but I am glad that innocent people are being released.

5. Treatment
I read a story awhile back that the prisoners when released get dropped off in Afghanistan with zero compensation. Just, ok you are now free to pick up your life, good luck. Sorry, no link.It's real disgraceful how these "humans" have been treated by the Govt. that is suppossed to represent the American people and America's ideals.

7. Well, there's "two dozen" more people
who, if they weren't already, will become terrorists because of what our government did to them. Way to win the hearts and minds of people around the world.
