WP: TV Covers the Bush 'Dodge'

<snip>

The broadcast press corps is hot on the story of what some correspondents are calling President Bush's "retreat," or at least "dodge," on the issue of Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons of mass destruction.

On ABC, Terry Moran pulls no punches: "Asked directly whether he still believes weapons of mass destruction will be found in Iraq, President Bush simply dodged the question."

On CBS, John Roberts sees danger for the White House. "President Bush refused to even entertain the notion today that he received bad intelligence, but if what David Kay says is true, he is facing another massive intelligence failure, right on the heels of 9/11 -- only this time, it's an election year."

2. Maybe, just maybe, it isn't massive intelligence failure
but just that the * administration is a massive failure. How many people do you think are considering that option? Besides the enlightened folks at DU of course!

Seriously, pre-war lies and hard core questions about what the administration knew prior to 9-11. You don't have to know how to count to ten to connect the dots.

3. They got most of their intel from Iraqi defectors
i.e., people with a vested interest in seeing Hussein brought down. It is objectively obvious that that was no kind of intel to rely on. It shows the Bushies are either 1) stupid and careless, or 2) deliberately corrupt in using such BS as an exscuse for invasion. Either way...

6. dammit
Now Chimpya is going to be portrayed as the victim.

"The intelligence community let him down."

"He didn't lie ... he was trusting his advisors to give him good intelligence, and they let him down and made a fool of him."

"Poor, poor pitiful Georgie. Every day he comes down in his robe and slippers and asks Dick Cheney, 'Unca Dickie ... did we find the weapons TODAY?' and Unca Dickie says, 'No, little Georgie. Maybe tomorrow. Just keep wishing reeeeal hard on your rabbit's foot'."

What a bunch of crap.

11. I think that was the plan all along.........
that is, there were no WMD's and they knew it. They also knew that eventually everyone would know it, so their plan all along was to blame 'faulty intelligence' when facing accusations of lying about their existence.

35. Bingo!
They had good intel telling them there were no WMD's...but that kind of intel didn't fit their plans.

7. It's an intelligence fairure all right, but not necessarily ...
a failure of the intelligence agencies. The intelligence failure is, rather, how dumb the lies were that were used by the Bushistas to try to justify the invasion.

10. Question: Will this have legs in the mainstream media?

The track record with the mainstream media is not good:

Energy Commission?: No
Plame: No.
9/11 Commission?: No
Halliburton Pay Offs?: Not likely

I'm a "glass is half full" guy, so hope springs eternal (admittedly mixing metaphors).

12. what I don't see being discussed is the "having it both ways defense"
EVERYbody praises dumbo for being such a good delegator, excuses him for not being on top of the quotidian aspects of his job, leaving the details to his exquisitely qualified appointees.

if that's TRUE, which, even his detractors seem to swallow, then isn't HE the one responsible for appointing all the feckless, useless, incompetent geeks who assembled all this incredibly faulty information, leading us to WAR???????!!!!!!!!

do you see ANYbody, even in the fricking SPINEless Achordate Party bring this up?

16. preeeeecisely, can't have it both ways. remember how much was made of
Mr B*sh's appointments to bolster his inexperience in foriegn affairs, the glad handing about his delegating to experience.

And how much has been made of his "leadership" since then.....

Either he's in charge or not. If so, he's responsible. If not, he's irresponsible.

Thanks for the reminder.

13. terry moran is the toughest WH correspondent I've seen
funny last name, eh? heh

he's given it to Bush on several occasions, most recently in that rib joint, where dumbo came across as the biggest JERK possible

Harry Shearer bemoaned the fact on his show that, as connected as he is, there's NO VIDEO of that episode

he resorted to reading a transcript, similar to the one that was posted here on the subject.

He made the point that said episode should've been just as widely replayed as the I have a scream tape

that said, WHY didn't Moran, or ANYbody else bring up the fact that dumbo LIED once again about Saddam not letting inspectors in before the war started.

a kudos to him for pointing out the dodge, not nearly as exquisitely as Jon Stewart did last night (he missed the LIE, though, too)

point is, I'm SICK unto death of this crap about W being a straight shooting, honest guy, unlike his predecessor.

Why are the media SO unwilling (dems, TOO!) to call the LIAR a liar, and get the mendacity ball rolling the way they did w/clinton?

17. Slap down
Is the CIA going to bend over again? I they let this slide, their rep and cred is down the tube. This is a double bind. If the American people are now being told that the CIA was incompetent, which could be the case, where will the trust be when another invasion occurs? The CIA provided intell. The Neo Fascists cherry picked it to fit their agenda. That is just obvious but will the majority of Americans understand that or even care?

28. I can see by your post
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 02:28 AM by uhhuh
That both the "i" and "c" letters are represented on your keyboard. I would hope that you are aware that there is no such thing as a "Democrat" primary. If there is, I have not heard of it. The name of the party is the Democratic party. "Democrat contenders" is iffy at best.
Only those who are ignorant or right wing(same difference) refer to the party as such. I trust you are not either, so I would hope you would not further their aims by using that terminology.
They are trying to control the language, and it seems to be working. I have heard so many Democrats referring to the party this way. It is annoying.
I agree with your point, though. :)

29. Did they forget about the Office of Special Plans???
These chickenshit bastards cooked up their own intelligence for the war. Do they think we will forget how they cherry picked their own "intelliegence."

I am sure this is the tact they are going to take soon. The only question is whether the press will allow and support this dodge. The Office of Special Plans has to be shoved in their face by every candidate and Dem on every news and talk show.

31. Stupid White Men and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the
Nation.

When will the media stop making excuses for Bush's incompetence.
Its not an "intelligence failure" its a Presidential failure.

Paul O'Neill's book makes it clear that Bush planned for invading Iraq long before 9-11; finding the reason was an after thought.

This war and occupation is indicative of other failings in the economy and foreign relations.

Bush is not qualified to be President of the United States.

36. this pisses me off because I know a guy who works in DIA
A friend of a friend (for his protection I don't want to give specifics) works for the Defense Intelligence Agency. I ran into him last month and asked him about working for the Bush administration in general, and Rumsfeld specifically. He described it like this:

"They would ask for intelligence, we would give it to them, and then they would come back and say 'you're wrong'."

You can't really blame someone for not telling you something when you weren't listening in the first place.
