Cheney's false comment on oil drilling attacked
Source: Yahoo

By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer Fri Jun 13, 1:15 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney's office acknowledged on Thursday that he was mistaken when he asserted that China, at Cuba's behest, is drilling for oil in waters 60 miles from the Florida coast.

In a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Cheney said on Wednesday that waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, long off limits to oil companies, should be opened to drilling because China is already there pumping oil.

"Oil is being drilled right now 60 miles off the coast of Florida," the vice president said. "We're not doing it, the Chinese are, in cooperation with the Cuban government. Even the communists have figured out that a good answer to high prices is more supply--snip--

3. A whole party of liars. Cheney is not alone, it just comes naturally to the
repubics

<snip>

"China, thanks to a lease issued by Cuba, is drilling for oil just 50 miles from Florida's coast," Rep. George Radanovich, R-Calif., recently wrote in The Modesto Bee in California, arguing for opening waters that have been off limits for 25 years to U.S. companies.

Radanovich's office said the congressman was in transit and not immediately available Thursday.

House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio, calling for more domestic oil production, declared, "right at this moment some 60 miles or less off the coast of Key West, Fla., China has the green light to drill for oil."

"Even China recognizes that oil and natural gas is readily available off our shores, thanks to Fidel Castro," complained Rep. Roy Blunt of Missouri, a leader of a GOP energy task force.

Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., accused the Republicans of pushing oil development by "scaring up the ghosts of communism and xenophobia" and "perpetuating a myth that China is drilling off the coast of Florida."

The number of people who give any credibility at all to cheney and his sad lies is dwindling by the day. The ones who remain on board are the wackiest of the wackos.

9. whoa I'd heard that lie!
I was at my 401K meeting for work and the finanacial advisor was talking about stocks going down and used this as an example of America is NOT moving forward to fixing things.

My thought on his comment was "well why don't we OPEN trade relations with CUBA if we want to prevent china from working with Cuba instead of blaming the Chinese for doing that?" but I should have thought first "republican myth" once I put the pieces together of communism plus destroying the environment is good + we must win everything"

18. Here is my letter-probably too long. We'll see
On Wednesday June12th a letter from Michael Shepard ("Energy Problems Begin in Washington") stated that 'China and India are preparing to "slant drill" into our continental oil reserves from 50 miles off Key West' and was published in this newspaper. Not only does that statement not stand up to the most cursory review, it has been completely debunked in the two days since.

You can't drill 50 miles.
It is Cuba's territory to do with as they please (as per the Bush approved treaty with Cuba)
We should not allow Cuba (the bad guys, right?) to set our environmental standards.
Drilling has done nothing to lower the price of gas for the last 30 years it only benefits oil companies that are still able to manipulate price through “refinery margin”.
And so on.

Dick Cheney repeated this Republican talking point on Thursday June 13 and it was immediately refuted as pure myth by the University of Miami's Center for Hemispheric Policy Jorge Pinon, Republican Florida Senator (and former Bush cabinet member) Mel Martinez, and Dick Cheney’s office actually admitted that he had “erred” in repeating this claim.

19. Don't let them get away with that propaganda.
Keep pushing. If you have to, go public and out the paper and the person that sent the material in the first place.

Cut it off at the outlet.

Tell them this is illegal domestic propaganda.

Make a stink.

26. The scam:
When you watch Bush Gang in action, you always have to consider the scam. What do these guys really want? What they say at face isn't anywhere near to their real intentions.

Cheney and the gang keep harping about not being able to drill off the East Coast and ANWR and they just salivate at all of the potential areas where they might lock in the leases before January, because after then, the boys are going to have to pay top dollar for every drop of oil from public lands. There isn't going to be any more of those sweetheart deals where someone conveniently fails to put in a royalty clause, wink, wink.

All this crap about the Chinese drilling off of Cuba is bullshit and they know it, so the idea is to stampede the Congress into granting a whole shit load of concessions due to people screaming bloody murder about fuel prices.

Speaking of which.....Cheney gets his oil trader buddies to drive the price of oil through the roof. They get to make a mountain of money, the consumers are ready to scream uncle and all of the loyal Bush Bots are engaged in a campaign to drive Congress into falling for the bait.

Even the Saudis are scratching their butts trying to figure out where the price take-off came from.

We know, don't we...Dick?

24. Exactly
And, having been caught in the lie, will Cheney be held to account for the rest of his bogus argument?

Nope, the popular media will be happy for a couple of hours on a Friday afternoon that Cheney was caught with a bald-faced lie. The rest of his argument will merrily continue on its way. And the lie will eventually be rehabilitated into the truth, and John McCain will (I practically guarantee it) use it in one of the presidential debates this fall and nobody will say a goddam thing.
