Kroger Recalls Roast Beef (Atlanta)
Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 01:06 AM by CShine
Kroger, Atlanta's largest grocery chain, recalled a brand of roast beef Tuesday after a sample tested positive for a potentially lethal bacteria.

The Private Selection Roast Beef was recalled after a sample taken from a Kroger deli service counter in Atlanta by the Georgia Department of Agriculture tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Kroger is asking customers who purchased the roast beef this month to return it to stores for a full refund.

Two other brands of roast beef produced by Private Selection -- Angus Roast Beef and Cajun Roast Beef -- are not affected by the recall.

1. Trouble is
once it's sliced for display and placed in the service cooler, it's contaminated everything else. A recall on the beef isn't going to help you if you bought the honey ham on special that day. And once its in your fridge, there's a good chance other items can be contaminated with listeria. The good news is that cooking will kill listeria. Bad news is that it's usually found on food that is labeled "ready to eat". Even worse news is that it thrives on the cold temps in your fridge.

Bon Apetit!

2. Good time to become vegetarian
I honestly like meat but after reading Al Franken's chapter about the pig farms and Molly Ivin's chapter about the inspections, it is really loosing it's appeal.

3. exactly, regarding the going vegie
i haven't had beef in three weeks because i genuinely believe mad cow is in the food supply and, frankly, don't trust the govt to be truthful about it.

haven't had soda in the same period of time because high fructose corn syrup is bad for you.

still eat chicken occasionally. will always eat fish (though not salmon, since farm-raised gets pcvs from polluted groundwater). adios, pork. and being a southerner, i love barbecue.

read fast food nation a few years ago and really thought about it then. this latest nonsense spurred me to do something about it.

and i already feel better than i have in years.
