ACLU files complaint with U.N. about U.S. detention of immigrants
The American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday filed a complaint with the United Nations over the detention and deportation of migrants in the United States following the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

"Literally hundreds of immigrants were denied basic due-process rights," said Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU. "The government used race, religion and national origin as proxies for suspicion."

The Bush administration said the detentions have been crucial for U.S. security. The ACLU claimed that the practice violated international accords to which the United States is a party.

The government began making detentions within days of the attacks to "demonstrate to the American public and to Congress that it was taking immediate steps to fight the war on terror," Romero said.
