Bush lauds China's response to earthquake
Source: CBC

U.S. President George W. Bush on Friday thanked China for "welcoming our aid" after a devastating earthquake struck last month and praised Beijing's strong response.

"No question, this is a major human disaster that requires a strong response from the Chinese government, which is what they're providing," Bush said on a visit to the American Red Cross headquarters in Washington. "But it also requires a compassionate response from nations that have got the blessings of life, and that's us."

Bush praised Americans for helping victims of the May 12 earthquake, calling the response "impressive" and "unprecedented."

"My message to the Chinese government is: thank you for welcoming our aid, thank you for taking a firm response to this disaster and just know the American people care about the people of China."

Chinese soldiers are continuing efforts to prevent further destruction as an earthquake-created lake threatens to spill over, endangering the homes of tens of thousands of people in the area.

1. Quick response
is a bandage that will undoubtedly help heal a torn province. Certainly, China's response has been faster and more comprehensive than BushCo's Hurricane Katrina quagmire.

But lingering effects are going to dog China for a long time: why did the Chinese Government approve the construction of entire cities of new structures that they *knew* could not withstand even a milder quake than last month's? Why did the Chinese Government ignore Chinese seismologists' reports of an imminent earthquake (one seismologist even predicted it within 6 days)?

All to recreate itself as the world's supplier of everything mundane.

3. It's all corruption.
You need to understand that it's the local governments that are most corrupt and dictatorial, and that the central government at least knows what needs to be done.

The environmental laws and worker's regulations are impressive for a poor country, but local governments are bribed to look elsewhere while workers are abused and pollution is dumped anywhere. Right now the *government* doesn't suppress activists, but a corrupt county official in cohorts with a factory owner (who sells to Wal Mart and provides the only source of $ to the county) sends goons to rough them up.

One needs to ask why the recently built Communist Party Offices were fine but schools crumbled like cakes.

5. Irony challenged.
Could that be considered a birth defect? Should we start screening for it?
