British team makes last-ditch attempt to reach Beagle 2 on Mars

LONDON - British scientists announced a "last resort" plan Monday to hail the missing Mars lander.

No one has heard from the Beagle 2 lander since it separated from its mother ship in mid-December.

Earlier efforts to contact Beagle 2 using the European Space Agency's orbiter Mars Express, NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter and British and U.S. radio telescopes have failed.

The latest attempts to make contact over the weekend were also unsuccessful. The sweeps followed a 10-day period of radio silence designed to force Beagle 2 to switch to its emergency transmitting mode.
