DeLay Is to Carry Dissenting Message on a Mideast Tour
By DAVID FIRESTONE

ASHINGTON, July 24 — Tom DeLay, the House majority leader, never tires of reminding people that he is just a former pest exterminator from Sugar Land, Tex. But beginning this weekend, he will travel to the world's most complex and troubled region, meet with prime ministers, speak to a foreign parliament and, by his presence, remind the Bush administration to pay heed to its right flank as it seeks to make peace.

As he travels next week through Israel, Jordan and Iraq, he will take with him a message of grave doubt that the Middle East is ready for a Palestinian state, as called for in the current peace plan, known as the road map, backed by the administration and Europe.

"I'm sure there are some in the administration who are smarter than me, but I can't imagine in the very near future that a Palestinian state could ever happen," he said in an interview today, as he prepared to leave for a weeklong official tour.

"I can't imagine this president supporting a state of terrorists, a sovereign state of terrorists," he said. "You'd have to change almost an entire generation's culture."

hopefully, this will fix the link, on edit:

2. DeLay
Is there a pie in which he does not have a finger? What qualifies him to travel and stick his nose in the Middle East? Is he looking for foreign cockroaches to import? Tom is from another universe.

5. but do you think he would be doing this
without a tacit approval from *? I don't. I think the bushies want to pretend to support a Palestinian state but that's not really their goal.

24. I doubt that, actually
Rove's not going to do anything (or let Smirk do anything) to piss off the wingnut base. He'll stay hard right until the campaign is in full swing (I know, you're saying it HAS been ever since 2000), when he'll just TALK moderate.

Delay is one of those wingnuts who actually think he has more power than the pResident (who takes his orders from CheneyRummyWolfie etc.). Remember that line in the restaurant about "I **am** the federal government!"

9. That is out and out racism

"I can't imagine this president supporting a state of terrorists, a sovereign state of terrorists," he said.

So, a Palestinian is a terrorist. Just by virtue of being Palestinian.

Of course, we should expect this kind of out and out racism from DeLay.

20. This sort of thng is doled out
regularly even here. I've been called a terrorist loving whatever and I have said little on the matter but I've found fault with Sharon. DeLay has many in agreement with him, even here at DU.

Horrifying, no?

21. Horrify yes.
But call the racists out when they are racists. Soon the type of hate that Tom DeLay spews will be regarded as slogans like "Segregation Now . . . Segregation Forever!"

Don't let racists and bigots go unchallenged.

15. DeLay is one of those bible thumpers who believes in
the whole thing about the Rapture coming once Israel is restored to its 'former' borders, or something along those lines. I read a speech of his once on the subject that was simply insane. He's using the terrorist issue as cover for his real aims. The Palestinians could be an entire nation of sheep, and he would still oppose them getting a state because of his nonsensical religious beliefs.

In using terrorism as an excuse, by the way, he is a lot like Israel, so he'll fit right in there. On the other hand, that Jordan, a majority Palestinian state, will be entertaining this crazed bigot points to what kind of regime the Hashemites have.

If I was in charge of who the Dems. decided to 'go after/spend money' to unseat he'd be top's on my list. I'd donate all I could to get rid of him, he's a pox on America.

19. er... given the rage fanned by the on-going conflict
couldn't this be seen as working against US National Interest? Or seen as making us, in the US less safe? Granted the most fundamentalist supporters of DeLay - those who believe that this is the beginning of the "rapture" (and who don't see it as inconsistent that they would be greater than God in terms of trying to create the events to make it happen, rather than God working on God's terms - and given their literalist interpreations of the Bible and God -0 I find that very ironic) - to those supporters nothing could peel their support away from DeLay and the elements in the GOP (growing) that follow him.

But there are many still in that camp - who might find it frightening that one of the top elected republicans is actively working to keep the US citizens a target of international terrorism, and that he is working to foil the desires of the public to seek a peaceful resolution in the Mideast. It is one of the pieces of the puzzle, that if played loudly and often enough, will prick the conscience of those in their party who are growing increasingly uncomfortable with the extremism withint their own ranks - and are starting to face the realities of the likely consequences of having these particular "leaders" have so much power.

22. He may be breaking a Federal Law
Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 45, Section 953 of the United States Code
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/casecode/uscodes/18/parts/i/chapters/45/sections/section_953.html

Section 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

It might be a stupid law, but it's still the law right now.
