Greenspan : Confident Lost Jobs in the United States Will Be Replaced
By Martin Crutsinger The Associated Press
Published: Jan 26, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Monday that jobs lost in the last recession can be replaced but that unemployed workers may need retraining to qualify for new work.
In a speech prepared for an economic conference in London, Greenspan sought to address fears that many of the 2.8 million manufacturing jobs lost in the past 3 1/2 years could be gone forever to lower wage countries.

16. 250 years..
I heard that figure recently.. if the jobs return at the rate they are returning now, it would take 250 years to reclaim them all. Any wonder why a certain candidate called for Greenspan to step down because he's becoming too political?

2. Nice analysis, basically
"everything is bound to be fine."

Job retraining? Here ya go - practice saying this until it feels really automatic "Would you like to supersize that?"

Amazing how someone can trot out a soundbite with no numbers, ignore all current reality and blithely declare that since no banks went under recently, everything is fine.

5. There are lots of jobs - just look at the pages and pages of want ads
That was Reagan's old line - he used that one almost as often as the Cadillac driving welfare queen. The man lived in a cartoon world, just like Shrubbie.

7. "Greenspan: confident jobs lost in the U.S. will be replaced...
...in Bangalore" I'm pretty confident of that too. ;-)
On a personal note, I finally found a second job to replace the one I lost last year. This means a) I'll FINALLY be able to donate tp DU after my first paycheck. b) I won't have to choose between heat and food.

8. Hahah. That's a riot.
I read a story a while back about a GM worker who was laid off in the early 80's when the country started outsourcing jobs. He, too, received training in a new field, computer programming.

His programming job was recently outsourced to India.

WTF are you going to train these people to do Greenspan? I'm sure there are Indian economists who would do just as good a job as you being Fed Chair for a damned site less money.

10. That sounds like me...
Got tired of the layoffs, so I spend five years getting two degrees, just so I can watch my new career swirl down the toilet. I got plenty of skills, but none that translate into jobs. And I have no idea what to train for next. I'm a bit old to flip burgers.

11. This Comment Is Designed To Pacify The Masses
Greenspan's quotes will be repeated over and over throughout the media. The only problem is that it's b.s. The wealthy elite are quaking in their boots right now. They know that the job base is declining and that Americans are getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of jobs and pay.

13. Greenspan thinks
that if he keeps telling us how great the economy is that we'll somehow believe it. Dean was right - Greenspan needs to get the hell out of Dodge and be replaced by someone with a vision and a concrete plan to improve the economy; not some wizard behind the curtain.

17. Greenspan is living high on the hog

but that unemployed workers may need retraining to qualify for new work.

Well that is a revalation--it is their fault they are out of a job. It is their fault and now it is up to them to upgrade. Meanwhile their children's lives are at stake.

This is truly a tragedy. We must now begin to live at our wits.

This country is assinine in it's worship of corporate rule.

If we can exist without bending upon our knees to them, we can survive and instill the proper values in our children. Those values of happiness due to individual effort and work are most important.

Buy some land somewhere now. Grow your own food, make your own clothing, and be happy with your children.

We do not need this superficial adoration of all things manufactured in China, or elsewhere.

Live the simple life if you can. Any pursuit involving the corporate squeeze on you is bound to make your soul black and your children grown up to be superficial dumbheads.
