Edwards rules out vice presidential run with Obama
Edited on Fri May-16-08 10:16 AM by UpInArms
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former presidential contender John Edwards said on Friday he would not be Democratic front-runner Barack Obama's running mate, but did not rule out taking a role in an Obama administration.

"Won't happen," Edwards told NBC's "Today" program when asked if he would be Obama's vice presidential pick. "This is not something I'm interested in."

Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004, dropped out of the presidential race in January after failing to win any early primaries. On Wednesday, he gave his coveted endorsement to Obama over rival Hillary Clinton.

Asked if he had spoken Obama about a role in his administration if he beat Republican John McCain in November, Edwards said, "Only in the most abstract way."

Edwards said Obama had told him, "I want you on my team. I want to help you both in the campaign and with the work we want to do when I'm the president."

1. YES! Thank you, John!
His copious talents would be wasted in the VP post.

Now, as AG....

27. Now there's a good idea...
I think the best reason for him in the VP slot would be to enhance the ticket but after that I agree with you --his talent would be wasted. Better as AG or HHS or HUD secretary (both positions where he could pursue anti-poverty initiatives.)

He's perfect for the position -- a current day Bobby Kennedy going hell-bent against the bad guys. :hi:

12. I bet he would. And I had the same image of Bobby Kennedy in my mind. Edwards would clean up
that Dept. and restore it to its original purpose and ideals. Fumigate the gonzales out of it!

39. In 2008, that would be an ideal position.
President? Someday, but not in 2008.

Vice President? Never.

Edwards had a less than enthusiastic response to the Kerry VP thing, initially ("you should ask him if he wants to be MY VP"...Google it), but I think that he WANTS to serve, and AG might be the right job at the right time.

On the VP thing, I feel Edwards is employing the "fool me once" rule.

6. He'll be in the final mix somewhere, but not as VP
That was one of Bush's weakest points...cronyism, signing up too many of daddy's boys. It's time for an administration based on skill and experience, and Edwards has plenty of both.

34. The fact that Fredo can't find a new job is proof that justice ...ultimately... prevails.
I have to admit, I was shocked. I thought that there would be any number of Bush suck-ups who would hire the man on the spot.

The fact that Gonzales is poison re-affirms the fact that justice...while it takes its own sweet time...does in fact prvail.

35. Nah, not really. For justice to "prvail" you'd need to have the iron doors clank behind Fredo,
Scooter, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Miers, Rice, Rove, Domenici and - god, the list goes on and on, right up to and including
The Chimp in Chief.

If that's ever done, I volunteer to swallow the key.

36. Well, Conyers want to arrest Rove...
...so we'll see how that goes.

One of the most embarrassing words in the Democratic lexicon is "Fitzmas"...

...the definition is "did not amount to JACK SHIT"...

...but I dunno...Conyers is a tough guy. He talks the talk, but he walks the walk. We shall see....

I'm thinking a pack and a half. No cartons. I'm thinking 5 minutes after Rove is incarcerated, he will know why the caged bird sings...

As far as qualifications go, I'd have to say that NOT Clinton trumps being a woman. Obama can't bring that bitch onto the ticket. She bashed him too hard. There is a penalty for that.

44. Pound Sand...

Clinton has run a campaign treasonous to her own party. There is no need to reward her with a VP nomination. It's just the latest "delusion" by the "inevitable" candidate for President.

BTW, Clinton can pay her own bills on a her destructive campaign. So I hope you send her a little more $$$ to pay their $20 million deficit.

Hillary is a DLCer. She does NOT represent this county and she certainly does not represent the future. She is a corporate kiss-ass with social liberal tendencies. In my opinion, she is a borderline Republican and likely always the conservative albatross hanging around Bill's neck.

40. Once burned, twice shy.
I don't blame him- after Kerry caved without a fight Edwards MUST be more than a bit gun shy (so to speak). I'm not saying Obama would ever do the same to him- I don't believe for an instant that he would- but I wouldn't want to put myself into that same position twice either.

Knives in the back hurt for a LONG time after.

42. I nominate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for Vice President . . .
and ask that the convention confirm the nomination by acclamation . . .

yeah, I know he's supporting Hillary . . . but his commitment to the environment and his on-point analysis of the Bush administration's failings more than compensate for that one lapse in judgement . . . which, btw, probably had more to do with his desire to assume Hillary's Senate seat than with any real fondness for the candidate . . .
