McCain Plane Still Flying: Campaign continues to use Cindy's corporate jet
Source: New York Times

May 10, 2008
By Barry Meier and Margot Williams

Cindy McCain said Thursday that she would never release her personal income tax filing even if her husband, Senator John McCain, was elected president. But Federal Aviation Administration records indicate that she appears to be using her personal wealth to help his campaign, through the continued use of her corporate jet.

The New York Times reported last month that during a crucial five-month period Mr. McCain’s campaign regularly used a corporate jet owned by the Phoenix-based beer distributor that Mrs. McCain heads, saving the campaign hundreds of thousands of dollars. His campaign pays rates well below market ones for the plane’s use because of an unresolved exemption in a recent campaign finance law that Mr. McCain backed.

According to public records, the campaign has continued to use the plane, even as Mr. McCain, of Arizona, became the presumed Republican nominee and his campaign’s finances have improved. In late April, for instance, the plane landed in Selma and Birmingham, Ala., at the same time he was there as part of his tour of impoverished areas. It also landed last month in New Orleans just before Mr. McCain’s appearances there....

Mr. McCain has said his campaign’s method of reimbursing his wife’s company for the plane is legal, and no one disputes that. But critics have argued that Mrs. McCain is effectively subsidizing her husband’s campaign because either she or her company has to make up for the difference between what his campaign pays for the jet’s use and what it really costs to operate it.

1. Excuse me? Not release tax filing?
Sorry to tell ya this Cindy baby but the system doesn't work that way. Not only should you be required to release personal income tax records in the godawful event Johnny should win the election, you should have to release them NOW! Everything in your life is fair game lambchop, especially financial records. But maybe there truly is a double standard for the gop.

24. Oh please. First Ladies wield an incredible amount of power given they are unelected.
Consider Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush or even Hillary.

30. She files separately, but provides him with a jet
I'd want to know all about someone providing a major party presidential candidate with such a valuable perk. And I'd want to know even more if that person had broken up the candidate's first marriage. And I'd really want to know if that person said she would "never" reveal anything about her personal income, because then it would look like she's hiding something. And if the Republicans have taught me anything in the last eight years, it's that when they don't want to disclose something, it's usually because there's something criminal involved. And unless Cindy McCain is going to maintain a separate residence should her husband be elected president, then I want to know who she is beholden to now. Because after the election, it will be the usual Republican dodge of "Too late, you should have asked during the election."

That's why.

4. this is good, very good
keep on using the wife's jet, Sen. McCain. Don't encourage her to release her personal income tax filings. Keep on doing things that make us question your integrity. Better still, keep on doing and saying things that make us question your sanity. Keep Lieberman close so he can provide us with frequent updates whenever he checks your "bearings." Don't stop!

Keep on doing these things because you'll be campaigning to Sen. Obama, making the case why you'd make a lousy president!

The propaganda machines that sit in our living rooms will keep mum on this because it is a republicon and the machine has told them to divert the peoples attention.

Oh, look over there, Brittney or is it? But look over there, not here.

6. Time for another red herring to get peoples' attention away from Cindy's tax records.
If the wife of a Democratic candidate was doing the same stonewalling, there'd be so much outrage from the media gerbils, you'd be hearing about it daily until she or he released those numbers.

Damn that librul media!!

I seem to recall that the pukes used to demand a LOT from Hillary.

In any case, the campaign using her jet ... that's a gift and it's likely a violation of campaign finance laws authored by ... guess who????

8. As GOD FORBID First Lady, Miss Cindy would receive taxpayer money..
to run her personal office and staff. I think it's fair that she should file a separate ethics statement. This goes for Michelle Obama too. The law needs to be changed. Miss Cindy proves she's a hard nosed bitch, and she's probably got something to hide.

9. republicans raised a stink until Theresa Heinz Kerry released her returns
Edited on Sun May-11-08 07:14 AM by JDPriestly
And after Mrs. Kerry released her returns, the Republicans made propaganda hay of them:

Teresa's Fair Share
October 18, 2004

The Kerry campaign finally released Teresa Heinz Kerry's 2003 tax return, or rather two pages of it, late last Friday, and the story got buried next to the hardware-store ads. We think she ought to release the rest of her return, since her wealth was crucial to salvaging her husband's struggling campaign during the Democratic primaries in 2003.

But even this minimal disclosure deserves more attention in light of John Kerry's pledge to raise tax rates. In 2003, Mrs. Kerry -- or Teresa Heinz, as she declared herself on her IRS 1040 form -- earned $5.07 million, hardly a surprising income for someone estimated to be worth nearly $1 billion.

The news is that $2.78 million of that income came in the form of tax-exempt interest from what the Kerry campaign's press release attributed to investments in "state, municipal and public entity bonds." What the campaign didn't say is that these are the kind of investments that rich people can afford to hire lawyers and accountants to steer their money into. On her remaining "taxable" income of $2.29 million, Mrs. Kerry paid $627,150 in taxes, for an overall average federal tax rate of only 12.4% on her $5.07 million in total income.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB109805839967047671.html?mod=opinion%255Fmain%255Freview%255Fand%255Foutlooks

We should throw the Republicans' 2004 arguments about Mrs. Kerry's taxes right back in their faces. How dare they insist that Mrs. Kerry release her tax information and then refuse to release Mrs. McCain's tax information? What are the McCains hiding?

14. That was not the reason - the reason was that her tax forms include
information on various trusts that affect her sons. As it was there was nothing in THK's taxes that wasn't in the Senate form. Cindy McCain was said to have ties to Keating - THK was never accused of any financial problems and gives away a huge amount of money via for foundation. There is nothing similar in these 2 women.

Sheesh. Now (2004) the WSJ is opposed to the ownership bonds. For the record, anyone can buy into a municipal bond fund without the help of a lawyer, though it doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense to do so, depending on your tax bracket.

13. True and it is a pretty conservative thing to do - the opposite of speculating
They allow government the ability to raise money paying less than the rate of return on money for any other investment. For someone as rich as THK it is simply a very risk averse investment.

The Republicans were just unhappy they had nothing to use against the Kerrys. It also explains why the tax rate is low - the denominator includes all these bonds - where the rate of return is low BECAUSE it can be set there and still be attractive because there are no taxes. In essence the government already got the benefit by getting money cheaply.

Which surely raises the ire of Grover Norquist. I guess the next step is for the WSJ to fire their reporters who cover municipal bonds. Fortunately, the editorial page writers stay away from the news desks - so far.

Edit: in a sane world, the WSJ editors would have praised her for putting her money where her mouth was. She was investing (and as you said, not speculating) in schools, roads, water treatment plants, and so forth. Oh, how awful.

Thanks for writing.

26. Exactlty _ I was just expanding on what you said
In a way, the degree to which the media totally distorted Teresa was actually worse than what they did to John Kerry. Most people who wanted to see the truth quickly saw that the Navy, not Kerry, said he was a war hero. The other attacks - that he was an empty suit - were pretty much put to rest by his excellent debates. She had no forum herself and it was easy to take things out of context. I was inpressed in 2004, but was blown away by their book tour, her women's health conferences that she has done for 12 years and recent work on woman's pensions, (If you didn't see it, here's a link to a Dkos diary she wrote and responded to be in this weekend. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/5/10/1437/82773/297/513298 It must have particularly hurt as she had been the wife of a Republican Senator and had been liked by them then.

To give one example of how distorted it was - I heard nothing in 2004 about her leading by example on green building. She hired Bill McDonough a top architect interested in green building, who is now well known in green building to create a green office building. She was instrumental in the Pittsburgh convention center being the largest green building in the US. These very workable examples have led to many others following. She also funded research on this and on the health effects of toxins in food and in the environment. Early this year and last year there were many articles speaking of Clinton's foundation taking on green building as one of their efforts. But New York magazine was the only place that wrote that this was in its infancy - at the point the article was written early this year - all that had been done was to get people to pledge donations. Yet this got more print than everything Teresa has done in over a decade.

How many people got the truth that she is likely as smart and has the same goals her husband has. Being First Lady would have been continuing what she does - at a more visible level. One person spoke of her women's health conference that also deals specifically with toxins and cancer was designed to bring people working on these issues together to enable them to gain from hearing each other's work.
