US risking Cold War: Gorbachev
Source: AFP

LONDON: The US risks starting a new Cold War by proposing to build its missile shield in central and eastern Europe, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev warned in comments published in London yesterday.

Washington claims the anti-missile system it wants to base in Poland and the Czech Republic is aimed solely at countering the threat from what it calls "rogue states" such as Iran, but Mr Gorbachev said the assertion could not be trusted.

Instead, the US military build-up - plus the eastward expansion of the NATO alliance into Russia's traditional sphere of influence - was aimed at containing a resurgent Russia, where Dmitry Medvedev was inaugurated as president late yesterday.

"The US cannot tolerate anyone acting independently," Mr Gorbachev told Britain's Daily Telegraph in an interview conducted in Paris. "Every US president has to have a war."

4. Now here is a REAL issue to ask the candidates about.
Who will have the nerve? This is a question the pudits should have been addressing in the debates instead of talking about Rev. Wright.

5. such as 'how does our change to first strike (Iraq) affect Mutually Assured Destruction policy'
Edited on Thu May-08-08 11:38 AM by barnel
in a return to a cold war?

in the 5+ years since that disasterous mistake, i've never heard anyone ever ask that question

In the cold war we said 'we wont start a war, but we'll finish one

So nobody started one, confident we wouldnt hit first

How does our change to first strike affect this?

we may get our answer someday, as a blinding flash in the sky

Not like any of this is more important than rev wright or anything
