Unicef warns of Iraqis 'at risk'
By Clive Myrie
BBC News, Baghdad

It is increasingly hard for Iraqi aid workers to help tens of thousands of people caught up in fighting in Baghdad, according to Unicef.

The Sadr City area of the capital has seen the worst clashes between government forces and Shia militia.

The UN children's agency says over 150,000 people there are having difficulty accessing clean water, food and other essential services.

...

Unicef is warning that tens of thousands of people are at risk because they cannot freely move within their communities, cut off from clean water and food supplies by snipers or by roads laced with improvised explosive devices.

Fighting has severely damaged water and sewage pipes, posing serious health risks.

Hospitals are reporting shortages of medical supplies, while other health facilities open and close depending on the ability of staff to turn up for work, and are often in locations too dangerous for patients to use.

2. The Hypocrisy of UNICEF
Edited on Wed May-07-08 01:06 PM by Baby Snooks
UNICEF has promoted the Bushes as champions of UNICEF, particularly Jenna Bush, and so there is an intrinsic hypocrisy in their appeal for the Iraqi children. A very appalling intrinsic hypocrisy.

Rather than pander to political correctness UNICEF should have condemned an illegal war that has resulted in the deaths of untold numbers of Iraqi children - the figures vary. But one need only go back to Madeline Albrights comment about how the death of innocent children are worth it.

At that point, in 1996, there were 500,000 children. There are probably 1,500,000 children at this point. We will never know. Because UNICEF will acknowledge whatever figure is politically correct as being the official figure. Which will probably be less than what it was in 1996.

UNICEF needs to get a mirror. I and quite a few others who used to support it wouldn't give them a dime at this point after their pandering to this administration and to the Bush family. The United Nations should have long ago condemned this war but it too decided that political correctness was more important than moral correctness.

As for Madeline Albright I truly am horrified by the thought of anyone even remotely connected to the Clinton adminstration holding public office including the office of the president of the United States.

If Hillary Clinton manages somehow to steal the nomination and becomes president no doubt she will continue the tradition of LBJ and escalate the war because war is good for war profiteers. She has made if quite clear that she believes in "by the corporation, for the corporation" rather than "by the people, for the people" and that of course includes Halliburton and quite a few of the "friends of the Bushes" who appear to also be "friends of the Clintons."

How so many long for a Nuremberg to cleanse our collective soul. For a Nuremberg to hold all accountable finally. Including the Clintons. And Madeline Albright. May she rot in Hell along with the Clintons and the Bushes and Nancy Pelosi and all the others who have supported all of this.
