GOP leaders warn of election disaster
Source: Politico

Shellshocked House Republicans got warnings from leaders past and present Tuesday: Your party’s message isn’t good enough to prevent disaster in November, and neither is the NRCC’s money.

The double shot of bad news had one veteran Republican House member worrying aloud that the party’s electoral woes — brought into sharp focus by Woody Jenkins’ loss to Don Cazayoux in Louisiana on Saturday — have the House Republican Conference splitting apart in “everybody for himself” mode.

“There is an attitude that, ‘I better watch out for myself, because nobody else is going to do it,’” the member said. “There are all these different factions out there, everyone is sniping at each other, and we have no real plan. We have a lot of people fighting to be the captain of the lifeboat instead of everybody pulling together.”

...

And in a closed-door session at the Capitol, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told members that the NRCC doesn’t have enough cash to “save them” in November if they don’t raise enough money or run strong campaigns themselves.

I hope and expect that they will be so distraught that they will have no hope or desire but to sit their happy arses at home and, "Fire up a colortini, sit back, relax, and watch the pictures, now, as they fly through the air"* as the GOP goes down in flames.

Oh just the thought of a Democratic tidal wave on the magnitude of 1936 which only left 17 Republicans staggering in the Senate...better yet, if it was on the magnitude of the Canadian tidal wave that put Jean Chrétien in Canada with only 2 Tories in the House of Commons....just the thought of a House of Representatives with only 2 Republicans in it :-)

39. Dont get cocky.
Letting down our guard because it looks like they are finished would be a mistake, they could stage a comeback for a number of reasons.
Say for example if something like 9/11 were to happen again or if Bin Laden were to suddenly be captured or if they found those so called WMDs in Iraq suddenly.

82. Oh, but they DID! They DID!
They found three chemical shells from which the agent had mostly evaporated after lying on the ground in the middle of the desert since the Iran-Iraq War, detected half a drop of agent in each, then went to the press with the news that The WMDs Had Been Found!!! Of course, the press breathlessly repeated the tenth-truth that the six liters of agent each shell could have held (assuming that the shell was full and the agent hadn't been neutralized by sitting in 140-degree heat for 22 years) was enough to kill Ninety Million People.

Yes, you can kill 90 million people with six liters of agent, but the kill scene is gonna look a lot like the line of people waiting for poisoned Flavor-Aid at Jonestown. They, of course, forget to mention that.

12. About tonight's Republican primaries
I find it very interesting that in a race where McCain is already acknowledged to be the last man standing for the Pubbies, about 25% of the primary voters are voting for Anybody But McCain. Huckabee, Romney, Ron Paul are all getting a significant percentage of the votes.

Seems that the Pubbies aren't too united these days.

better candidate who will excite their base WITHOUT going negative and without catering to big business. If they don't change, they lose. AND MAYBE THAT'S JUST WHAT THEY WANT TO DO? Looks like it to me.

106. I don't agree
They are just going to slam whoever our nominee is with lies and deception, then paint McCain as the same guy in 2000 who motivated independants to vote for him. And sadly, people pay so little attention, they'll buy right into it.

They rally their base by attacking our candidate.

31. I still think McCain is going to win.
Edited on Tue May-06-08 10:23 PM by ryanmuegge
He has much more positive media coverage. Hopefully I'm wrong, but when a guy is covered like he is an infallible Christ figure by the media, he's going to be tough to beat. I do think we're underestimating the power of McCain's PR team (Chris Matthews and most of MSNBC, FOX, CNN, and most of the major newspapers) and the image they have created for him.

Plus, we have a woman who's already disliked and a flag-hating black separatist who's got ties with terrorists from the '60s. The media has completely destroyed both of our candidates. The amount of damage that the media has done to Obama's reputation just in the past two months is staggering.

I should note that the record turnout in our primaries is very encouraging.

69. What bother me most is the Third of Democratic
voters that say they will vote for McCain if Obama is the Nominee it is much less of a percentage of Obama supporters that would vote for McCain if Hillary was nominee...

I will have to see how it shapes up but I fear that those White Blue Collar types are going to swarm McCain before they elect a black man if you know what I mean....

Why would anybody base their vote strictly on the color of a mans skin?

Oh I better not ask that too loud because Obama is getting 90 percent of the black vote right now vs. Hillary and honest I don't think they are really that far apart on the issues regarding black voters to swing this large a percentage so maybe people are voting based on skin color.... The further we come the further back we go I guess.

75. Have to agree with you ryan
The media controls the message and the warmongerracistliberalhatincorporatehumpinbloodsuckinrightwingextremists control the media and THAT IS the problem and I dont see us getting over that.

Its beyond me how any American could cast a vote some republican fuck but you know they'll be pounded by the media with messages of democratic negatives while the media runs cover for the republican cult. That works and Im afraid we just cant beat that. Until we reclaim our national media Im afraid we are screwed. Hope Im wrong of course.

it has to. there will be...umm, june to november - five months when the democrats will not be ignored no matter how much the media tries.

i gave up on msm for my news years ago. years. i know i'm not the only one, and the numbers are growing and growing. people are getting wise. things have gotten soooo fucked up under this administration, there are very few people who can ignore it any longer.

democrats will win. though the numbers will have to be incredibly huge to beat the fix the bushies are working on. no way in hell can mccain win an honest election, the only question is can the democrats defeat the stealing of the election.

130. I disagree. I think the pocket book trumps racism. Unemployment, gas above $4.00 a gal.
Food prices out of site, homes being foreclosed on, unable to afford health care and all Mc Cain offers is more time in Iraq. People are seeing that the basics are getting harder and harder to come by let alone luxuries. The right offers noting but more conservative dogma. Keep the tax cuts permanent, more war, more jobs going overseas, more H1 visas.

They may hate a black man but if that black man can make their lives better they will vote for him. It's just like sports. If a black athlete can make your team a winner no one sees their color.

...while the Dems still play out their own twisted version of the movie "Election." I actually saw a McCain for President commercial this morning. I can't remember EVER seeing one so early in the year. But, hey, why not? What better time to solidify your position when your opponents are in utter chaos? The SDs need to be declaring here within the next couple of weeks. If this fiasco continues into June and the possibility of a convention floor fight becomes even more real...shit, McCain won't have to do a damned thing to win. Sad.

176. I don't agree with your prognostication, but ...
... but the one thing I fear most is that too many voters will consciously or unconsciously view McCain as the "safe" candidate -- a known commodity they've been fairly comfortable with during his political career.

Obama is something new, and change is often met with trepidation or perceived as dangerous. The Repuke campaign machinery understands this, and will do everything they can to reinforce doubt and fear in the minds of the voters. It's the only way they can win this election (besides election fraud or theft by the SCOTUS).

Here's what assuages my fear:

OBAMA CAN wage a brilliant general election campaign and demonstrate to enough voters that he will be by far the better president and that another 4 years of Bush policy would be the worst thing for our country.

70. Assuming that there is an election at all...

The way the political picture for November 2008 is coming into focus the fascists are certainly going to have to create some sort of catastrophe or "emergency" in order to "postpone" the election. I doubt that they are looking forward to losing their power and positions. To expect anything but a third-world style political transition or coup after the last two debacles would be naive.

Another option they may utilize is the "Bobby Mugabe" ala Zimbabwe. Screw up the vote counting (since the margins of the victorious Democrats will be way too large to tweak enough to steal), they have already institutionalized corruptible, unreliable and opaque "voting" machines and software. It would be easy to engineer some sort of election night "meltdown" that obliterates enough of the votes to cancel the whole farce.

Of course it has to be understood that the Democratic Party has a history lately of having slam-dunks bounce off the rim and go out-of-bounds thereby losing the contest. If there is any way to screw up what should be an election rout, the neo-libs and the DLC will find a way to accomplish their only goal. Maintaining the corporate corruption and anti-democratic exploitation of the working people, the poor, brown, yellow and black people and the weak has to be continued.

Among so many bell weather issues like our illegal occupation and domination of Iraq, the ignoring of the first ten amendments, the "bill of rights" by the current regime and their complicit enablers of BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES and the health care crisis, where are the two Demo candidates? How about some leadership concerning campaign finance reform?

Surely not leading! Not telling the truth, as ugly as that would be! No, they are saying what they believe will endear them to the sheeple. Gas tax holidays, no less. What a sick, stupid hoax/joke. I would expect something so dumb from the Rethugs but to hear it parroted by the desperate Billery is beyond belief.

The Republicans, the party that preaches individualism, is now in trouble because its members are too concerned about themselves rather than the party.

I wonder if one of the members asked Tom Cole with a sneer how the party knows how to spend its members money better than its members. Would Cole say, "gee, you're right!"

The Republicans and Conservatives are suffering a fate they deserve most.

now do you think they realize that Cheney and Bush in no certain terms do not give a shit about the Republican party, apparently Cheney made his feelings very clear, that he does not give a shit about the Party, only in for himself.

I hope the Democratic Party does not blow this election.

112. Good. F*ck them.
The current republican party is dead. Dead. They realize people don't really care about "God's, Gun's, and Gay's" anymore. People care about the economy....Iraq war...health care....etc.

They should start there first, if they want to save what's left of their party. After that, they need to embrace the fact that yes, there are gay people out there. Yes, there are brown people out there. Yes, there are poor people out there. Etc.

Once they accept that, then maybe, just maybe they can fix their party.

Until then,

F*ck 'em.

113. This is very sad!
Folks,

You know, Jesus said that we shall reap what we sow.

Political parties are supposed to help the people... and by that I mean the general public... the middle class, the poor and the working class.

In 1994, Republicans stood for the public. One example of this was to promise a Balanced Budget Amendment.

Not only did they lie about this... then they began pushing for their old habits of "borrow and spend" that we see today. This is what they "sowed".

This "Duck and Cover" mentality that they have now is their "reaping" time. If only they had kept their word when they promised us fiscal conservatism, they wouldn't be in this mess today.

Instead of gloating and shoving it down their throats, I propose that we Democrats learn from the Republicans' mistakes. Because we were the ones who overreached and abused power by 1993.

Let's keep this in mind as our power grows over the next decade.

White House.

Here's Republican change for you. No Abortion, no Gay Marriage, make the top 1% tax cuts permanent, privatize social security, remain in Iraq forever, attack Iran, Syria and North Korea, more tax cuts for corporations, more visas for foreign workers, more jobs sent overseas, a new super patriot act rescinding the 1st amendment, tax money for private schools that teach fundamental christianity, rewriting of all science text books to include christian dogma in place of scientific fact, complete republican control of every government organization with loyalty oaths required for job retention, repeal of any requirement for employer paid health care, more tax cuts for the wealthy, repeal of all minimum wage laws, basically all working class people will get up each day, earn enough money for the days ration of food and shelter and produce what ever is needed to keep the wealthy ruling class in power. If you get sick you should die to decrease the excess population. If you rebel you go to the Black Water concentration camps for re-education. "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

Maybe the GOPers had better choose up and get Pat to pray for the voters forgiveness cause it looks like GOPer-gawd is about out of cash and in a bad mood this election cycle.

What, this comes as a surprise to them?

Look at the turn-outs for the Democratic primaries, and compare to the turn-outs for the Republican primaries. Where is the party enthusiasm?

Look at the funds raised by the Democratic candidates, and compare to the funds raised by the Republican candidates. What does that tell you? For crap sake, even kooky Ron Paul outraised any of those guys.

Within their party faithful, nobody was excited about McCain. Remember when he was all but written off as a candidate? While the "front runners" were busy tearing each other apart, he kept plodding along and pulled off a coup. But look among the hard-core rethug constituency and find me one group that is excited about McCain. Guess what, you can't.

McCain is a dead man walking. He is a sacrificial lamb who is going down in flames just before his party goes down in flames.

They need someone to tell them this? I'd be happy to hang out my shingle as a high-priced consultant and tell them how scr***d they are at $100,000 a pop. Heck, I'd be happy to do it for free.

Ah- fresh air!

But I do share the sentiment that we should not be too sanguine.

They could make another "terrist" attack happen, for sure.

Or, something even worse. I don't think anything is past them.

That's why we should keep pushing for impeachment. These fuckers are dangerous.

If we do get the country back, I hope we have the sense to prosecute the numerous criminals currently holding power.

I really believe if we had prosecuted every law breaker after Watergate, the current thugs would not have been able to stage their coop in 2000.

Reminds me of Napoleon. They didn't send him far enough the first time. Big surprise when he came back! The second time, the Brits did it right.

who said after the 2004 election:

"Once the minority of House and Senate are comfortable in their minority status, they will have no problem socializing with the (Democrats). Any farmer will tell you that certain animals run around and are unpleasant, but when they've been fixed, then they are happy and sedate. They are contented and cheerful. They don't go around peeing on the furniture and such."

Of course, I replaced Republicans with Democrats, but you get the idea. Looks like it's Norquist and his ilk who are the eunuchs.
