Talk of McCain-Jindal ticket surfaces again
Source: Times of India

6 May 2008, 0001 hrs IST

WASHINGTON: The historic prospect of putting a person of Indian origin within a heartbeat of the US presidency -- a possibility more incredible than having a woman or a black man in the White House -- has surfaced again.

Weeks after influential radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh first floated the idea of having Bobby Jindal, the highest ranked Indian-American politician in US history and newly elected governor of Louisiana, as John McCain's running mate, Republican strategists are once again said to be seriously weighing the idea.

At least four McCain staffers and advisers have mentioned the 36-year old Jindal as a possible vice-presidential pick, the conservative commentator William Kristol revealed on Monday, citing a host of reasons for what could be a shock selection for the Grand Old Party.

Among the reasons: A Fox News poll showed that McCain led Obama in the straight match-up, 46 to 43. But when voters were then asked to choose between two tickets, McCain-Romney vs. Obama-Clinton, Obama-Clinton won 47 to 41.

21. Ugh
Did you have to post a picture?! He looks like a used car salesman...with apologies to actual used car salesmen.

Anyway I'm so sick of this boy wonder nonsense. He was my representative and spent the entire time campaigning for governor. I honestly don't get the fascination with him. The only explanation is that propaganda works.

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if he meant to use the governor's office all along as a steppingstone to higher aspirations. Now I wouldn't mind that as long as he doesn't win and is removed from the governor's office.

2. We can only hope. A 36 year old who is one arrythmia away from the Presidency?
There are some VP choices that are more important than others. Given that he is going to be 72 and has cancer, I would say that he had better choose wisely.

Jindal is barely old enough to be President and has nowhere near the experience (life or political) to be a viable choice.

13. my thoughts exactly
If McCain "conveniently" dies in office, then Jindal would be nothing more than a right wing mouthpiece. If that happens, you can go ahead and start packing up all of America's jobs to India.

17. Not an Obama supporter then?
Sorry, but if Jindal doesn't have the experience to be VP, then there's no way you could support Obama for President.

Just pointing that out...

26. If you are going ot say that I hope you can back it up with a link.
Jindal will not be the VP candidate. He doesn't have enough experience, is not strong on the economy (which is what McSame needs) and does not bring any swing states into play.

His name is probably being thrown out to get some name recognition for running in '12 or being a legit VP pick for that race.

27. You're right about his having converted
I hadn't known that.

Wikipedia says he converted from Hinduism to Catholicism while in high school, which makes it unlikely, albeit not impossible, that it was for political reasons.

.........so fucking what. I mean Obama could pick a woman, Bill Richardson, or a fucking Martian for christ sakes. Just keep these things in mind: THE WAR, THE ECONOMY, HEALTHCARE COSTS, JOB LOSSES and on and fucking on. Fuck, I could run with a dog as my running mate and I would beat McSame, McLame, etc. McCain has an uphill battle already and we haven't even chosen our nominee yet.

24. Yuck. I fucking hate Times of India headlines
"More incredible than having a woman or African American..." blah blah blah...Wow, Jindal is brown, therefore that's incredible! What a worthless rag of a paper.

Jindal is brown. So am I? So what? Fuck this kind of blind identity voting. Jindal will be a great neocon hack. He'd work perfectly with McCain, because he's the same, except MUCH browner, and MUCH younger (after all McCain is ghostly). Jindal talks a great talk about fighting corruption, like McCain, but in reality wants to actually do little. Fucking useless hypocrites.

25. My suspicion about this rumor
is that it will never happen. Was never serious. But, like the Condi as VP rumors, is meant to show that the GOP is not a racist white guys cabal while in reality, yes, the GOP really is a white male cabal with absolutely NOT ONE African American member of Congress in 2008. There are a few scattered females, Hispanics, and, of course, Mr. Jindal. But the GOP is, and will continue to be this election cycle, the party of the rich white man. Just look at who ran for the nomination: Romney, Huckabee, Tancredo, Guiliani, McCain, Thompson. Old, white, male, rich. This is the best the GOP could do after over 200 years?
This is Rove/Gingrich strategy. Float the Condi/Jindal speculation so people think the GOP has progressed. But when it comes time to actually choose the nominee, look for some "up and coming" young white guy from a very important swing state.

Lets be honest. Do you think all the white racists who are in the GOP and are disgusted by blacks and mexicans are going to vote for a GOP candidate they hate with an Indian VP? Most of them probably don't know the difference between an Indian and an Iraqi anyway.

Plus all the 'Reagan Democrats' who won't vote for Obama because he is black will have to contend with the fact that an Indian is a heartbeat away from the presidency if they vote McCain.

Ah racial tension. Is there no problem you cannot both cause and solve?

39. funniest thing about the macaca incident
was that most indian bloggers, who are pretty practical about their self interest, were furious about the macaca incident

not because of what was said, but because it hurt Allen, who could be counted on to replace American workers with people from India
