FBI: Suspected Pipe Bomb Damages Courthouse In San Diego

SAN DIEGO - A suspected pipe bomb exploded at a federal courthouse in downtown San Diego early Sunday, damaging the front entrance and blowing out a window, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

Few people were around the building, which is a block from nightclubs in the Gaslamp Quarter, when the powerful blast also damaged the lobby area of the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Courthouse about 1:40 a.m., said FBI spokeswoman April Langwell.

The bomb was reported by two guards in the building, who were uninjured. About 40 agents combed the front courtyard after the area was swept for explosives. No arrests have been made.

Debris was found lodged in a window about eight stories up the AT&T building that faces the courthouse. The evidence collected will be sent to an FBI laboratory in Virginia for analysis by bomb experts.

8. Courthouse Bomb Blast Caught On Tape

SAN DIEGO -- Federal officials released surveillance video from the moment a pipe bomb exploded at the San Diego federal courthouse on Sunday.

The blast took place May 4 in front of the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse located at 940 Front Street. Officials said that Sunday's blast caused considerable damage to the lobby and entrance of the courthouse, which reopened Tuesday.

The FBI previously said there was surveillance tape which shows some individuals in the area shortly before the blast, but authorities did not release that tape. Officials told NBC 7/39 that is because they do not want to jeopardize their investigation.
