Italy posts income details on web
Source: BBC

There has been outrage in Italy after the outgoing government published every Italian's declared earnings and tax contributions on the internet.

The tax authority's website was inundated by people curious to know how much their neighbours, celebrities or sports stars were making.

The Italian treasury suspended the website after a formal complaint from the country's privacy watchdog.

2. A good idea, let's do it here too.
If we can be subjected to cavity searches for wanting to get on a plane, there seems little reason to treat ones income as private.

3. And what would be the reason?
So that everyone can be a nosy little busybody prying even further into everyone else's affairs? Or to give thieves a roadmap to the targets that would likely be the most lucrative for them, so that they could maximize their time? I know - so that salesmen of all kinds and stripes can get an instant list of people in their chosen demographic!

Wow, that would really be wonderful!

6. Well, nowadays, you don't really need a reason.
Or terrorism serves as a sort of universal reason for anything.

9. From an American standpoint,
perhaps women would actually have a fair shake under the Supreme Court's idiotic decision regarding gender based discrimination.

I don't mind people knowing what I make. $28,000 last year.

We know what celebrities make for each tv show and movie they're in.
We know how much sports stars' contracts are for.
Our elected officials have to disclose what they make.
The SEC monitors big transactions.
Everyone in a union knows how much everyone else in that union is making.
And on and on.

Knowing how much someone else makes isn't "prying".
Knowing what they spend it on is, but that's not what's being talked about.
Do you really think thieves have a hard time figuring out who has money and who doesn't?
As for salespeople targeting demographics, when have they ever let not knowing your salary stop them?

Why is it such a big secret?

5. Deputy Economic Minister Vincenzo Visco
Deputy Economic Minister Vincenzo Visco said he could not understand what all the fuss was about.

"I can't understand what the problem is," he is quoted as telling Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper.

"This already exists all around the world, you just have to watch any American soap to see that.
Maybe I need to start watching soaps, because I have no idea what he's talking about.
