U.S. warns Iran on al Qaeda suspects
Edited on Sat Jan-24-04 12:57 PM by Angel_O_Peace
DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Iran must extradite jailed al Qaeda captives and crack down on others still at large who may be fomenting attacks on the United States, a senior U.S. official said on Saturday.

The official renewed White House demands that Tehran, which said on Friday it would put on trial a dozen al Qaeda captives, should instead hand them over to their countries of origin so that they could be interrogated about plans for future attacks.

He said Washington feared al Qaeda members were still operating in Iran.

"The Iranians need to think very carefully before they allow a group of senior al Qaeda members to operate on their territory while they foment attacks against the United States or our allies," the official said.

"It would not be in their interests long-term, in terms of trying to improve their relations with the United States."

This particular article tells it all pretty well:

Making Nice

Terrorism. Corruption. Whatever the topic, John Ashcroft claims America just wants to be friends

The U.S. attorney general at the World Economic Forum
WEB EXCLUSIVE
By Arlene Getz
Newsweek
Updated: 10:39 a.m. ET Jan. 24, 2004Jan. 23 - John Ashcroft was determined to hammer his point home. America wants to work with the rest of the world in the fight against terror. America isn’t going to go it alone. America needs help, the U.S. attorney general repeated over and over as he took the main stage at Davos on Friday.

“The way we’re going to get this done is with your help,” Ashcroft told the corporate and political leaders who turned out to hear him address the World Economic Forum meeting. “We need the help of the entirety of the world community in the war against terror,” he said again later. And so on.

Last year, when Ashcroft showed up in this Swiss ski resort to speak to the crowd of global movers and shakers, he epitomized to non-Americans the harsh, hard-line face of a White House administration that many considered dangerous warmongers. Ashcroft was seen as the vanguard of a force to erode civil liberties under the camouflage of antiterror laws. They gave him a polite but chilly reception, and if there were no public displays of open hostility at the time it was probably because the scripted Davos ambiance just doesn’t lend itself to that sort of confrontation.

This year, Ashcroft came more as statesman than public prosecutor. “America stands for the human dignity of every individual,” he said. “One of the shared values must be that we don’t devalue anyone for what they believe because of their ethnic origin.” Acknowledging that it had been difficult for America to recognize that it couldn’t fight terror alone, he paid tribute to various international organizations and expressed gratitude to “the dozens—dozens—of nations that are helping us.”

11. Oooh, a group of senior Al Qaeda members!
Glory be! How grand, they have a whole group of them, and they're senior members! And all I have to do is place my unquestioning faith in an unnamed senior official talking to someone at Reuters!

I mourn for the last brain cell of the collective American mind. I am America's rotting cerebral cortex.

Iran has never confirmed the identity of the suspects, who according to Western intelligence and Saudi sources may include al Qaeda's security chief and a son of its leader, Osama bin Laden.

I like that paragraph. It prompts me to go to my safe place where I rock back and forth and chant, "WHAT ON EARTH DOES THIS MEAN? WHAT ON EARTH DOES THIS MEAN? WHAT ON EARTH DOES THIS MEAN?" It's a zen exercise, like contemplating the sound of one hand clapping.

9. Wait a minute! I'm confused
The official renewed White House demands that Tehran, which said on Friday it would put on trial a dozen al Qaeda captives, should instead hand them over to their countries of origin so that they could be interrogated about plans for future attacks.

Is the White House demanding Iran hand over Al-Qaeda suspects to their countries of origin or is Iran demanded the White House hand them over to their countires of origin?
