BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A truck bomb exploded Saturday as a U.S. patrol was turning into a police station in a restive central city, killing two Iraqis, a day after two U.N. security experts arrived in the capital to study the possible return of international staff.
Separately, a top Shiite Muslim leader declared that a U.S.-backed plan for handing power to Iraqis was "unacceptable," as two American pilots were killed when their helicopter crashed.
The blast, in a Toyota pickup,
wounded 40 people including seven American soldiers and damaged a dozen other vehicles in Samarra, Capt. Jennifer Knight of the 720th Military Police Battalion said.
The American military police patrol was turning into a police station to join Iraqi police when the explosion occurred behind it, according to Knight's colleague, Sgt. Maj. Nathan Wilson.
