Retail gas hits record $3.50 a gallon as oil marches higher
Source: (AP)

Retail gas prices hit another new milestone Monday, jumping to an average $3.50 a gallon at filling stations across the country. Crude oil prices, meanwhile, set new records of their own, spiking above $117 a barrel after an attack on a Japanese oil tanker in the Middle East.

Diesel prices at the pump also struck a record high of $4.20 a gallon, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, putting pressure on truckers and other shippers who rely on the fuel to transport goods to market.

Gas and diesel are expected to keep climbing as they trace the path of crude, which has surged to new records for six trading sessions in a row. And the worst may be still to come: The summer driving season, when demand is at its greatest, has yet to begin.

"It's uncharted territory. People look at the prices and think they're being taken advantage of," said Tom Kloza of the Oil Price Information Service, Wall, N.J. "I don't think we're done, but I have to believe we're in the eighth or ninth inning" of price increases.

1. I saw $4.09 yesterday in San Francisco.
But it's OK. I'm an elitist, so I can afford to pay it.

2. Yup, $4.05 when I got gas....
Saturday morning, already up 4 cents when I saw the station this morning. :( My business requires I use a vehicle, so there is no way I am getting away from the gas price problem.

29. People still driving SUV's Price needs to be higher
The bottom line is that the price is obviously not high enough. People are still driving down the road with one person in an SUV big enough to carry 10 people. Obviously $4 a gallon is not going to solve the problem. Make it go to $10 a gallon with a tax increase if that is what it takes.

24. My little Moped get 90 mpg, slow but it get me where I am going
Below Five Miles I take my bicycle, but living in the Mountains of Pennsylvania it is hard to go five miles without going up one mountain side or another. Thus I use my 80cc Moped on longer trips, It hits the mountains at about 25mph, but makes it up them just fine at that speed. goes up to 40 mph on flat areas. I like the 90mpg. The Moped only has a 1.2 gallon tank so I have to fill it up often at about $3.50 each fill-up. I joke, I fill my moped TWICE as often as I filled by Jeep Wrangler when I was driving my Wrangler, but only at 10% of the price (Do to the small tank on the Moped and its 90mpg fuel usage). The Moped was worth the $2000 it cost me (And the $80 a year in Insurance, in Pennsylvania, at least, Insurance is $1 per cc when it comes to Motorcycles).

6. It's been $3.49 for a few days in western Wisconsin.
I filled up this morning, only 5 gallons since I have an 11 gallon tank. So if the price goes up a nickel I will have saved a quarter. I probably could have driven another couple of weeks on the gas I had left. I don't worry about the price of gas concerning my personal car use, but its impact upon the price of food and goods as well as the cost of home heating for next winter.

22. Drill where? The US is tapped out
ANWR holds approximately 6-8 billion barrels of recoverable oil. The US uses 7.5 billion barrels PER YEAR. We're talking about a 1-year supply of oil, requiring 5-10 years of build-out to get to it. And this is the largest remaining conventional oilfield left in the US.

You're grasping at crumbs, I'm afraid.

23. You will hear this type of chorus from all sorts of folks very soon.
"I can't drive to work because I bought a house out on Mercury."

"I can't afford to fill up my behemoth of an SUV because I kept my head buried in the sand for the past 8 years!"

"I won't take public transportation because it's icky!"

"I won't conserve because, damn it, it's my god given right as a merikan, to drive anything I want, to anywhere I want!"

"I'm going to complain and do nothing because, if I take responsibility, I won't be able to complain!"

"buy a smaller gas efficient car? that's a death trap!! I need 10 tons of steel protecting me!!!"

"but I have to take junior and miss junior to soccer practice because they can't walk the 5 blocks to the field!!""

It goes on and on and on and on and on...

20. how much....
....of that $3.50+ per gallon is capitalist price speculation?

....of that $3.50+ per gallon is corporate profiteering?

....of that $3.50+ per gallon is corporate supply manipulation?

....per gallon if we included current and future corporate wars and taxes we must pay? $4.00/gal? $5.00/gal? $10.00/gal?

....per gallon will we be paying in a year or two as we skirt economic collapse?

....per gallon if we factor in all the social costs of unregulated corporate profiteering?

....still, most people in this country want that big, thick, throbbing, greasy capitalist cock up their ass....they can never get enough capitalism....so, enjoy!
