Conspiracy theories abound as US releases Uday-Qusay photos
Thursday, 24-Jul-2003 10:41AM      Story from AFP / Ned Parker

BAGHDAD, July 24 (AFP) - Saddam Hussein is tanning in Tel Aviv; his wife Sajida and three daughters are sipping tea in their mansion in Leeds, England; and his sons Uday and Qusay are gambling in Monte Carlo.

Such wild conspiracy theories, widely believed by ordinary Iraqis, are why Washington released what it said were photographs of Saddam's slain sons amid great fanfare Thursday.

"It's a show," laughs sculptor Mohammed Ghani Hikmat about Uday and Qusay's deaths, announced by the US military Tuesday.

"Everyone is talking. Some people say the family is in England. Some people say Morocco. Some people say they're in America."

1. And if the photos had NOT been released
We'd see a different bunch of conspiracy theories.

2. There is only one way to resolve it.
Give up the bodies to the Iraqis.

Give them the heads of Udai and Qusai.

3. My first thought as well
I didn't believe the initial reports, but admitedly was stopped in my tracks when I heard a US general say unequivocally "they are dead". Still skeptical, my first thought was "give them to the Iraqis". They would know and then I would be convinced one way or the other.

But today I find it doesn't really matter any more to me if they are dead or if they died the way it was reported. The damage is done. The SOTU story is no longer headline and the impotent 9-11 report is also not the top story. Effectively done IMO.

4. The Iraqi people
have seen the sons thousands and thousands of times, they immediately recognize a fraud........no matter.......the photos are NOT for Iraqi public consumption, they are for AMERICAN public consumption.

Just as the staged statue pull-down in Baghdad, with a roped off square and 75 bused in INC members, was not going to fool the Iraqi public...no matter....the statue pull down was not for Iraqi public consumption, it was for AMERICAN public consumption.
