Top Al Qaeda Leader Abu Ubaida al-Masri Confirmed Dead in Pakistan

Al Qaeda operative and bomb expert Abu Ubaida al-Masri, one of the terror group's top 10 leaders, is dead, a U.S. official confirmed to FOX News Wednesday.

Al-Masri was responsible for the organization’s external operations, meaning he plotted attacks outside the tribal areas of Pakistan.

A recent Los Angeles Times report described al-Masri as a "stocky Egyptian explosives expert with two missing fingers" who, as chief of external operations for Al Qaeda, has one of the most dangerous jobs in international terrorism.

The unidentified official said it is believed that al-Masri died of natural causes, possibly hepatitis, in Pakistan, and are staying away from a report that he was killed in a January CIA predator strike.

Al-Masri is tied to two major terrorist attack plots. The first being the 2005 London subway bombing, in which al-Masri is credited with recruiting, training and directing the homicide bombers. The second attack is associated is the liquid explosives bomb plot to blow up transatlantic flights bound for the U.S. and Canada in the summer of 2006.

U.S. officials say al-Masri has probably been dead for several months, with no explanation as to why news of his death was not released sooner.

I just compiled the number of news stories on DU alone about Masri, beginning in June 06 2006 when the death of Zawari was announced ( again) and immediately Masri was proclaimed by " our side" as his successor.
Followed by the reporting of Masri's death May 1 2007.

Now today's story....

This article isn't about him. It's about Abu Ubaidah al-Masri. (aka Abu Obaidah or Abu Obeidah ... transliteration's far from uniform in the media)

Abu Ayyub and Abu Ubaidah are almost certainly noms de guerre, but I'm too lazy to look up who or what "Ayyub" or who "Obaidah" is.

"Masri" simply means "Egyptian". It's both a common surname (al-Masri) and a common adjective. Both men might be from Egypt, or that might simply be a family name. I'm guessing the former in dear ol' Abu Obaydah's case, given how important the Egyptian GI was in early AQ days.

WASHINGTON -- An Egyptian al-Qaida boss believed to be the planner behind the foiled 2006 terrorist plot to blow up airliners over the Atlantic is dead of natural causes, U.S. counterterrorism officials said Wednesday.

One official said the strategist, Abu Obeida al-Masri, was also responsible for attacks on U.S. forces in Afghanistan and is linked to the July 7, 2005 attacks on the London transit system, one official said Wednesday.

Al-Masri is believed to have died of hepatitis in late 2007 in Pakistan's lawless tribal area bordering Afghanistan, a second counterterrorism official said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

... Little else is publicly known about Al-Masri. The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center does not even list him in its profiles of known and most-wanted terrorists.
