CBS Said to Consider Use of CNN in Reporting
Source: New York Times

CBS, the home of the most celebrated news division in broadcasting, has been in discussions with Time Warner about a deal to outsource some of its news-gathering operations to CNN, two executives briefed on the matter said Monday.

Over the last decade, CNN has held intermittent talks with both ABC News and CBS News about various joint ventures. But during the last several months, talks with CBS have been revived and lately intensified, according to the executives who were given anonymity because of the confidential nature of the negotiations.

Broadly speaking, the executives described conversations about reducing CBS’s news-gathering capacity while keeping its frontline personalities, like Katie Couric, the CBS Evening News anchor, and paying a fee to CNN to buy the cable network’s news feeds.

Another possibility, these people said, would be for CBS to keep its correspondents in certain regions but pair them with CNN crews.

Setting aside what this would mean about the future of CBS's new-gathering team, this arrangement would leave ABC without an affiliated cable outlet.

Setting aside what this would mean about the future of CBS's new-gathering team, this arrangement would leave ABC as the only network without an affiliated cable outlet.

9. Yeah, what the hell? That way they wouldn't have to make up their own bullshit.
They can just pass along the same lame crap, thereby enhancing its credibility, not to mention reaching a much larger audience that the 9 people who watch CNN. Then maybe CNN can be more up-front about getting their stuff from Fox, and that will simplify the White House's job, cutting down on the number of blast faxes they have to send out every night.

Good field reporting costs MONEY that the stockholders would rather have in their own pockets, not invested in a silly thing like journalism. :sarcasm:

11. At what point does the rest of the country wake up and collectively utter: "Oh sh*t!"
The media conglomeration has gone too far.

This MUST be stopped for I fear that we are getting too far into 'the plan' to ever reverse their effects.

14. True, this is how capitalism kills itself . . .
and why finally business people ask for the protection of regulations --- !!!

Capitalism isn't about competition --- it's about killing the competition.

the void to bring the REAL information to the human race, so we are not being led into deepening darkness.

25. How are you going to stop them?
CBS is a private company. They are outsourcing this to another company to save money. They aren't sending it to India. Do you propose nationalizing the news networks?

20. Did anyone see the Obama comment to Chris Matthews replayed on Jon Stewart
the other night?

Matthews asks Obama what really funny thing might have happened during one of his days that left him

laughing --

Obama replies that something like that happens almost every day --

but he's now given up cable news --- !!!

We should have this on YouTube --- it's great!!!

22. CBS owns their Minneapolis affiliate WCCO
and they are cleaning house on and off air in the newsroom. One weekend anchor and their chief meteorologist have been let go (more like unceremoniously thrown out of the newsroom). They are cutting employees left and right. It is no surprise that they are doing this on a national level. At least CNN has CNN International, which has correspondents all over the world (for the moment), which CBS et al have been pulling back from international coverage the past few years.

24. Edward R. Murrow is spinning in his grave
Wait...he's probably been doing that for years now watching the state of "journalism" in this country sink to the level it has.

To see where CBS started (with Murrow, etc.) to what it has become is to see the decline in objective, intelligent news investigation and reporting in this country. How far we've fallen. It's pathetic.

I have a better idea. Why doesn't Viacom buy CNN and turn it into the CBS News Network. CBS news is one of the few I have any respect left for.
