Canadian officials, sealers appeal to EU not to impose ban on seal products

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Canadian politicians and sealers appealed to the European Union today not to impose a ban on products derived from seals.

The appeal comes amid renewed claims that Canada's annual seal hunt off its eastern and northern coast lines is cruel and inhumane.

The EU's environment commissioner, Stavros Dimas, is considering a ban on all seal products amid increased pressure on him to take action by animal rights groups this year.

EU officials say he is expected to make his recommendations before summer.

3. You're missing the point of the OP ...

By banning the purchase, import & use of sealskin the major reason
why the seal slaughter happens goes away.

No-one needs to "bar Canadians from killing seals" if Canadians want to
carry on bashing: all this proposal will do is remove the profit motive.

See? No need to wind up the nationalism defence - just recognise that
what drives the annual slaughter isn't tradition but simple greed.
Sadly, as long as there are stupid rich ****s who will pay money to
wear the skin of a dead animal (and a non-food animal at that!) then
there will always be some immoral bastards prepared to satisfy the
"market".
