One Killed, 14 Wounded In Baghdad Green Zone Attack - AFP
Source: AFP

BAGHDAD (AFP)--Insurgents fired five rockets into the heavily fortified Baghdad Green Zone Thursday, killing one civilian and wounding 14 others, the U.S. military said.

The rockets hit the zone, the seat of the Iraqi government and the U.S. embassy, around 0915 GMT, causing a major blaze, Iraqi and U.S. officials said.

The Green Zone, which was once Saddam Hussein's presidential compound, has been repeatedly hit by rocket and mortar fire in recent days.

Wednesday, three Americans were wounded in one such barrage.

13. US says Iran could do more to help end Iraq unrest
Apparently yesterday.

Iran could do more to help end violence in Iraq, the US military said on Wednesday, calling on Tehran to use its influence to help end lawlessness in the southern city of Basra.

"There is no question that the government of Iran has significant influence in Basra, in the province and in southeastern Iraq in general," said military spokesman Major General Kevin Bergner.

"We would love to see the government of Iran fulfill its commitments to help improve security and stability (in Basra) ... and reduce the activities of those operating outside the law," Bergner told a news conference in Baghdad.

He was speaking a day after Iraqi security forces launched a massive sweep in the southern oil hub aimed, according to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, at "lawless gangs" that have taken over parts of city.

27. OnThurs, the State Department instructed all Embassy personnel not to leave reinforced structures
On Thursday, the State Department instructed all Embassy personnel not to leave reinforced structures. A memo sent to embassy staff and obtained by The Associated Press says employees are required to wear helmets and other protective gear if they must venture outside and strongly advises them to sleep in blast-resistant locations instead of trailers.

For the fourth day this week, suspected Shiite militiamen sent rockets and mortars into the Green Zone in central Baghdad. The volleys on Thursday began in the morning and came in about once an hour well into nightfall.

The attacks on the Green Zone are being carried out in tandem with growing clashes between Iraqi government forces and the Mahdi Army militia led by anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

By bombarding the Green Zone, the followers of al-Sadr are not only targeting the Iraqi government, but also the hub of the American political mission and its influence on the Iraqi government.
