Magnitude 5.9 quake hits off Oregon coast

PORTLAND, Oregon - A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday at 10:44 a.m. ET off the U.S. northern Pacific coast of Oregon, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was centered 112 miles west of Port Orford, Oregon, at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to Angel Gutierrez, a geophysicist with the USGS in Golden, Colorado.

The USGS initially put the quake at 6.0 magnitude.

2. Earthquakes are strange that way

There were several occasions during my 19 years in western Oregon where I felt an earthquake and other people in the same building didn't, or vice versa.

Once I was subletting the upstairs of a house, and I was awakened at 1AM by what felt like an earthquake. The next morning, I remarked about it to my housemates, and they hadn't felt a thing, nor was there anything about it on TV.

I thought I must have dreamt it, but then I happened to be in the grocery store a few hours later, and I heard someone remark to a cashier, "Did you feel that earthquake about 1 o'clock in the morning?"

Another time, when I was living in an apartment building, I heard neighbors talking about an earthquake that had just happened, and I hadn't felt it at all.

3. 112 miles away and that deep - if you're on bedrock, you won't feel it very much -

It's when you're built on fill, sand, or over rubble or it's "shallow" (1 to 3 or so miles down) that you really get the shaking. Also depends on what sort of fault you're on. We live within 50 miles of that Mexicali cluster of quakes that got as high as 5.6; being on bedrock, we didn't feel a thing. Two miles further away from where we live, there's a lot of building on fill and sand, and apparently that's where it had been felt.

Once we had a large magnitude slip quake while I was in a hallway walking parallel in the direction of the shockwave - I did not feel it, even though people walking in the hall perpendicular to me just 20/25 feet away started yelling about feeling it.

3 months ago outside the Oregon Coast. The exact same location, off Port Orford. That was (I think around 6.1 (?))
