SEOUL, South Korea - Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush arrived in South Korea for a three-day visit Tuesday, an official said amid media speculation he may go to North Korea to try to break an impasse over Pyongyang's nuclear programs.

Bush arrived on South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju, a Foreign Ministry official said on condition of anonymity, citing policy. The official declined to give more details.

Yonhap news agency said Bush arrived from Shanghai on a private plane, had lunch with Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Yang-ho and planned to attend a dinner reception with local business leaders.

Bush made the trip at the invitation of local defense company Poongsan Corp., which produces copper, bullets and other consumer metal products. Poongsan declined to discuss Bush's itinerary, saying only that he was scheduled to attend the company's anniversary ceremony Wednesday evening.
