Pope to host summit with Muslims
Source: BBC News

Pope Benedict XVI will host landmark Catholic-Muslim talks in November to improve ties between the two religions.

The announcement was made in a joint statement after a two-day meeting between senior Vatican and Muslim leaders in Rome.

The Regensburg speech provoked Muslim fury and triggered protests worldwide.

But it also prompted 138 Muslim scholars from 43 countries to launch an appeal to the Pope for greater theological dialogue, called the Common Word.

Since then the number of signatories to the appeal has grown to more than 200.

2. I have my doubts how the cardinal once known as "God's Rotweiller"
will get along with the Muslims. The quote Benedict recalled about Islam in the Regensburg speech was completely unrelated to the context of the entire speech and (IMHO) completely unnecessary and most likely intentionally provocative.

This should be interesting.

5. It could help reduce violence and tensions between Christians and Muslims.
That, IMO, means fewer dead people and thus is a good thing.

It also helps counteract president shit for brains' wonderful "kill 'em all" strategy

9. I guess. However,
I know many may not like this, but Islam needs to come into the modern world. It is afterall Muslims who wanted to burn people, kill them, and destroy their stores for printing pictures of their Prophet rather than just looking away.

13. Benedict is German, but
I believe the name came from then Ratzinger's vehement and aggressive defense of Catholic doctrine and dogma.

this Pope has given catholics in America fear that he may be rolling back the clock and the churches growth in the field of accepting scientific ideas.

11. Generalizing? Pope admits evidence for evolution.

"Pope Benedict admits evidence for evolution
...
This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favour of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such.

14. Pointless.
What is the point of meeting with Muslim moderates? The fundamentalists/extremists are the ones causing the problems (although the moderates don't exactly do a good job of publicly denouncing the actions of their extremist brethren).
