Tory fury on Olner's Dr Kelly rap (BBC Attack a Smokescreen)

Furious Conservatives in Nuneaton have labelled MP Bill Olner's attack on the BBC over the Dr David Kelly affair "a smokescreen".

Mr Olner was a member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee which questioned the Iraq dossier "mole" before his apparent suicide. ---

Mr Waine said: "Bill Olner's attack on the BBC is simply a smokescreen to distract public attention from the despicable bullying inquisition to which Dr David Kelly was subjected by the Foreign Affairs Select Committee - a committee of which Mr Olner is himself a member." ---

In contrast, the committe had showed no bravado in the face of Alistair Campbell's "table-thumping, finger-jabbing appearance" before the committee, he said.

The Nuneaton Conservative Association says those chiefly answerable are the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, his spin doctor and his Defence Secretary.

But its statement says Mr Olner is "sadly mistaken" if he thinks the select committee can avoid scrutiny of its part in "one of the most shameful scandals" in the life of the government.
