Machines jam at 3 Milwaukee polling places
By Meg Kissinger
Tuesday, Feb 19 2008, 09:37 AM

Problems at three Milwaukee polling places had technicians scrambling this morning.

Susan Edman, executive director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, said machines jammed at East Library, 1910 E. North Ave.; Holy Temple, 5575 N. 76th St.; and Congress School, 5225 W. Lincoln Creek Drive. All were back up and running by 9:15 a.m., she said.

There are 198 polling places throughout the city, Edman said, so some problems can be expected. Edman sighed when told by a reporter that some voters were told by poll workers to come back later.

"That's wrong," she said.

Voters can still cast their ballots and put them in a locked auxiliary slot on the machines.

"No one should be turned away," Edman said.

1. Wow!! Only a 198 voting sites?
Indianapolis which is about the same size as Milwaukee had over 500 voting sites in 2004.

6. They're not as easy to cheat, and they have a paper trail of the voters mark.

7. Actually, the scanner's memory can be hacked and the ballots
don't really mean much unless they are counted transparently.

9. Yet they can be audited
You just have to handcount all the filled dots. That is the fallback which gives a better result if there are problems.
