Bush: Rely on God for 'freer world'
Source: WashTimes

President Bush yesterday told the 56th annual National Prayer Breakfast that the United States should rely on God to "build a freer world."

Mr. Bush also told the D.C. gathering, which was focused on helping the poor and sick in Africa, that he has felt the "power of prayer" in his own life.

"Prayer has strengthened me in times of personal challenge. It has helped me meet the challenges of the presidency," he said.

"I understand now clearly the story of the calm in the rough seas," Mr. Bush said, referring to the biblical story of Jesus quieting the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Mr. Bush visited that sea on his trip last month to Israel, and said afterward it was "awe-inspiring to walk where Jesus lived and preached."

...

Mr. Bush told the prayer breakfast attendees that "experiencing the presence of God transforms our hearts."

"The more we seek His presence, the more we feel the tug at our souls to reach out to the poor, and the hungry, the elderly and the infirm," he said.

45. yes, different name, same deity
same god from Old Testament, Islam maintains that the Jews broke their coventent with God, and Christians are wrong in worshiping the Messiah Jesus, who was a prophet, like Moses, etc.

Bush prays to Mammon. When Bush says "freedom" what he means is a free hand for the corporations, and screw everyone else.

31. It is a mistake to believe in explanations that are
totally unverifiable. To do so is a bit like an airline pilot landing the plane in a heavy fog using a only ouija board for guidance. Yet, throughout the history of mankind, such fallacious behavior has been the rule rather than the exception. Unfortunately, Nature is on the verge of sever ly punishing us for our foolishness.

For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit,
which without cause they have digged for my soul.

Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself:
into that very destruction let him fall.

For they speak not peace:
but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land

Hey, worked out okay for David.

12. Fascinating, so much there, and yet he hasn't a clue...
it is not a case of "walking where Jesus walked", it is a case of understanding what Jesus spoke about; it is not a case of being dependant upon God for the things that you can correct on your own, you are expected to correct your own errors, not continue on with them.

The poor? Why has bush helped to create so many more of them with his policies?

"experiencing the presence of God transforms our hearts." Did this transformation turn bush's heart to stone? He is as empathetic and compassionate as a piece of granite.

The whole point of prayer is to ask for guidance, anything more than that is being a little toward the the arrogant side, because when one fails to act, they can say, "well, it's God's fault".

Kind of sad that a very simple religion to understand has been hijacked by insane zealots that haven't a clue...:(

14. Well, I think what
he meant was that the world 'should rely on God to 'build a freer world.'" because he was doing everything in his power to fuck it all up.

Seriously, where do we even begin to make a comment on the utter insanity of those statements. He talks about "the calm in the rough seas" and all I see is Katrina. The guy goes to the Middle East and comes back with all the insight of some fundy who has visited the Holy Land Experience in Orlando.

15. I'm glad his Middle East Field Trip was fun for him, but he slipping out of reality at this point..
He has really started to lose his grip on reality. All he has left is "God" and his "faith" to guide him. If Prayer strengthened him and helped him meet the challenges of his presidency, has he forgot to pray for 7 years? The man is a complete imbecile despised by most of this nation. Even the fundies over time will forget Bush's prayers and God talk. Military families will remember it is their son's and daughters occupying the space in the afterlife for no good reason at all due to that sorry excuse for a man. His legacy will be a skidmark on the legacy of America.

25. Link to enlightening article about the National Prayer Breakfast &"The Fellowship"
Article is from 2006 but maybe even more relevant today:
Is the National Prayer Breakfast Surrounded by a "Christian Mafia"? Religious Publicity and Secrecy within the Corridors of Power

~snip~
One of the nation's most public annual events that bridge the religious and political realms is the National Prayer Breakfast. One of the most secretive religious groups among the country's elite is referred to as "the Fellowship." Many do not realize that the two are linked very closely, for the Fellowship administers the National Prayer Breakfast and supports the attendant prayer breakfast movement. I find this relationship is integral to both dimensions of the Fellowship, yet movement insiders demonstrate a clear preference for the private and secretive elements and minimize the role ofr public legitimation for the group and its activities...

More at link - the National Prayer Breakfast is all about power and money and money and power...
