Insurgents kill 5 U.S. soldiers in Iraq's Mosul
Source: Reuters

BAGHDAD, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Five U.S. soldiers were killed when their patrol was hit by a roadside bomb and then came under small arms fire in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Monday, the U.S. military said.

The military said U.S. and Iraqi forces had secured the area following the incident, which was one of the deadliest attacks against U.S. troops in months. There were no further details.

Iraqi army and police also reported that clashes had broken out in the Haysuma neighbourhood, a known al Qaeda stronghold in eastern Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad.

The Mosul attack against the U.S. patrol takes to 36 the number of soldiers killed in Iraq this month, up from 23 in December but similar to levels in October and November.

14. The other day on MSNBC one of the so-called
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 12:22 PM by LibDemAlways
reporters was interviewing two politically active Florida college students, one pres. of the student Dems and the other pres. of the student repukes. The reporter asked the repuke who she was supporting and what she feels the important issues are. She said she likes McCain. When asked about his stand on the war, she came right out and stated that although some students are against it, it doesn't personally affect her and is not a big issue with her or her repuke friends.

I am a peaceful person, but if I had been able to reach through the tv and do her bodily harm, I would have. What a worthless POS. Kids her age are dying in a war she supports but has no interest in fighting. She and her college repuke friends should be forced, at the very least, to go along with the soldiers notifying families of their children's deaths or meeting the caskets when they arrive home. This "I support the war, but it doesn't affect me" attitude is bullshit. And wouldn't you know, the "reporter" just let the comment pass.

when it expires next month. But, the Democratic Leadership didn't have the cajones to keep sending a funding bill back to the WH with mandated timelines for withdrawal.

28. When you hear John McCain talk, you'd think the war was over,
& that all is left is some rebuilding to do, & everything is just great....That's all that old man says; "We winning in Iraq", etc. etc...

Every single day there is horrible violence in Iraq, as one look at the site below details that....The violence has decreased since the surge, but it is still a horrific situation.....The violence goes from absolutely horrific in 2006, to just awful & McCain is all giddy...

31. The only reasons violence has decreased since the surge are
that a) Muqtada al Sadr's Mahdi Army declared a 6-month ceasefire, set to expire in February 2008 and b) ethnic cleansing has been completed. Most formerly mixed Sunni-Shi'ia areas are now unipolar.

Upwards of 7 million Iraqi civilians have been killed, wounded, displaced externally (outside Iraq) or internally (refugees) since March 2003. As a percentage of overall Iraqi population, that is about 25% of Iraqi civilians. Translate those percentages to Amerikkka and you'd see upwards of 40-50 million Americans similary affected.

29. I wouldn't know if I was counting on teevee for my news.
We're moving forward, looking forward, not dwelling on the past, getting beyond the partisan politics, the bickering and divisiveness. The United States of Amnesia has no intention of holding anyone accountable. Not for the war, the lies told for war, the warmongering media, the repo takeover or Christianity for non-christian policies, the rigged elections, the war profiteering, the gigantic transfer of wealth to defense contractors - some of whom torture and spy, the undiminished influence of AIPAC... nothing. All we have to do is unite. You'd think the republi were winning the election because that's exactly what they'd call for.

What news? We're having a full-time game show to distract from the business of running the country. We're having a full time distraction from the corruption and wrongs being done. The repos are nuts. Hold them accountable for what they've done.

32. Dear God, I hope one of the casualties wasn't
my young cousin's husband, who's stationed there. They were married in December '06 and only had a month together before he was deployed last January; he's scheduled to return in March. They've spent their entire first year of marriage apart. I saw her at the family Christmas party this year; she seems to be doing okay, but it's really hard on her (she's only 23). Can't imagine what she's dealing with, or his family, for that matter. Is there some way to find out the names of those killed?

And last month, the grandson of a client of ours was killed in Afghanistan, only 23 years old; he was the second reservation member to die in the WOT (native americans are in the military in numbers highly disproportionate to their population).

34. 5 Soldiers die, with combined IED and Small arms fire. From near by mosque. -
NINEWAH, Iraq – Coalition Force Soldiers were conducting a mounted patrol in Ninewah Jan. 28 when insurgents detonated an improvised explosive device, killing five Soldiers. Insurgents attacked the other Soldiers in the patrol with small arms fire from a nearby mosque.

Iraqi Army forces and CF secured the area and returned fire on the insurgents.
The Iraqi Army entered the mosque, but the insurgents had fled the area.

“The insurgents are willing to desecrate a place of worship by using it to attack Soldiers to further their agenda,” said Maj. Margaret Kageleiry, a Task Force-Iron spokesperson. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next of kin notification and release by the Department of Defense.

If your cousin's husband is playing by "the rules of engagement" then he is at risk and hanging it out there like everybody else. If he's not playing by the rules.....well.....
