Phoenix Suns drops conservative group sponsorship after complaints
http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=10991&sd=01/15/04

The Phoenix Suns is caught in a fight between a conservative religious group and some Phoenix-area churches over anti-gay marriage literature that accompanied invitations to "Church Night" at a March basketball game. The Suns dropped the Center for Arizona Policy as its "Church Night" sponsor for the March 19 game after several clergy members complained about invitation packages sent by the Suns and the center.

The packets included a letter with the headline "The enemy's assault on marriage." The literature described center efforts to support a marriage amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would outlaw same-sex marriages. About 2,000 invitations were sent to Phoenix-area churches, and an additional 20,000 went to supporters of the Center for Arizona Policy, a group that lobbies the legislature for conservative religious causes. A number of pastors complained, and the team dropped the center as a sponsor.

1. Good for the Phoenix Suns
I applaud them for their action. You never know where cancer will show up on the body or the body politic. Please, will someone give me a rational explanation of how gay marriage will effect mine? Conservative hate knows no bounds.

2. "The enemy's assault on marriage." ???
Some of these fundies really are crazy loons. The enemy? What happened to hate the sin but love the sinner? (which I always thought was a smokescreen for bigotry anyway)

3. Why don't they worry about THEIR own damn marriages first ???
You know, "speck in your brother's eye, plank in your own..." and all that jazz.

4. Exactly - Divorce rates just as high among fundies
as the general population. I always thought it was divorce that destroyed marriages, not the gay couple across the street.

5. b/c fundies have to save you
b/c fundies have to save you. This has nothing to do with marriage, but with ensuring you have a happy afterlife. They are all over Florida, i deal with them all the time.

6. Actually, according to some reports
Fundies have a HIGHER rate of divorce than the rest of the population. They also have a higher than normal rate of wife/child abuse too.

7. Hey, they've got to respond to the market right?
Good for them for making a wise business decision.
Religion sucks!

9. I don't want
or need these people to defend or protect my marriage. I've been married for 29 years and have done quite well without the fundy's help.

If I behaved like a "traditional" fundy wife my marriage would have lasted about 10 minutes. I find their views far more threatening than the "enemy's."

10. Bully for the Suns....
but "Church Night"? :wtf:

Can anyone in the Phoenix area clue me in on this? Since when did the NBA sanction proselytization at its games?
