12. This is an interesting statistic if it holds
according to MSNBC link

Clinton and Edwards each won roughly 40 percent of the white vote, with about 25 percent going to Obama, the first-term Illinois senator.

15. I really found all of the racial focus of the article disturbing.
The subheadline was unusual, at least to my eyes

"Economy remained top concern; half of electorate was black"

Why would race be such a main issue as to be in the subheading...its almost like MSNBC was saying "Obama wins, but that is because of all of the black people".

Who knows, from their analysis, they certainly seem to think that black people put Obama on top. The statistic you cite being one that supports that premise.

They are working on a racial meme and I really do not want this primary to turn racial; I want issues. Oh well, I rarely get what I want politically, anyways.

19. That wasn't quite what I was thinking of but I agree
I was noticing that Clinton and Edwards are tied among white voters which could play out in some interesting ways in states that have less of a percentage of black voters.
Although it might just be because of Edwards being from the area.

Seems that the black voters finally turned out in record number to support the black candidate and I'm not being racist either.

Go back and look at the voting history and look at the data. This time, black voter turnout was record-breaking for SC.

Funny how they came out on RACE and NOT for experience. Looks like the Repugs will keep the WH as the GOP machine will definately eat the freshman Senator up in record time. If he and his campaign thought the Clinton machine was bad, they haven't seen anything yet.

Another blight on our country =(

20. How do you know they came out ONLY because of race?
Obama also WON 40% of the white Democratic vote

Did it ever dawn on you that it might be because of the ECONOMY and JOBS?

How about the Iraq War, Hillary's voting record on Iraq has something to be desired.

You want to know something, perhaps it is YOU who are not ready for an African American, not the country

28. That isn't my issue. How do you know the African Americans in SC only came out because of race?
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 08:10 PM by still_one
That is what I question

and yes, it was wrong of me to say that maybe you aren't ready for an African American president. I appologize for that remark because it was not justified. However, as a general statement there are people on this board, and elsewhere, who have commented that an African American cannot be president, and I do NOT agree with that premise, no matter who says it

You also brought up lack of experience, and I will debate with you that the poor judgement with Hillary's votes on the Iraq war, do NOT indicate necessarily the right experience either

I know it may shock you I am so hard on Obama but we have come too far and would hate to have someone so fresh in politics ruin it for the next African American that can lead our great country to prosperity. If Obama drops the ball, we will never get this close again. Obama's time is in another 4 years, just not now.

He is an expert in constitutional law, and his whole life story is the American Dream.

My family and I are happy for Obama but I'll reiterate again, it is not his time at the moment... 4 years from now would be the best thing for him AND for us.

I think it's a costly mistake for him to be running now as do a lot of my constituents. Now he is locked in and we hope and pray he can handle the rough ride that's coming.

54. and THAT is the voice of reason
I like the guy enough; he is my Senator, and I was proud to vote for him (although the alternative was Alan Keyes, so his winning the Senate seat is not exactly a stellar accomplishment).

The "swiftboating" he will be subjected to will be overwhelming. I fear he will wilt under the onslaught, and we will get president mccain, or romney, or some such awful apparition. And your point is well taken - that COULD screw it up for another African American 4, 8, 12 years hence - when Obama SHOULD be running.

It's nice to see someone using collective intelligence and looking further down the road. The way I had hope it would plan out is this:

Clinton '08

Obama '12

Myself and others feel that Obama's best chance is indeed 2012... do I need say more?? Then his Change platform would be the beacon that will unite us all as Democrats, as countrymen, as AMERICANS.

Obama is a great man and I'll cast my vote for him in the GE if he's the Nom but it's just not his time now...

..but you can thank Oprah for that I suppose. Never could stand her 1 bit as she's a hypocrite but always 'promoting the idea of empowering women' but got behind a black candidate. Even the women of my family saw her for what she truly is: a hypocrite. Thay've all stopped watching her months ago when she jumped on the ObamaWagon.

Still, I guess the best man won in SC.

Congratulations Mr.Obama for winning in SC with the record-breaking black voter turn-outs. If you win the whole enchilada, I will indeed cast my vote to you not only to keep a Repug out of the WH but in the hopes that you keep your word and honor the CHANGE agenda you are running under.

I hope and pray that you are who you say you are and will give We the People some well deserved Justice. I also hope and pray that we do not fall into the * trap because of blind faith (that's how * was able to have the WH for 8 miserable years) and support because of the color of your skin.

May the best PERSON win.

Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 04:58 PM by BronxBoy
Our community has been overwhelming supporters of White Democratic candidates for as long as I can remember. And funny, I don't remember people complaining about this dependable bloc of voters. But the one time we overwhelming cast our votes for a Black candidate, we are doing so out of blind faith? You say you are Black but do you know how condescending you sound? What we're too fucking stupid to look at the issues? By your logic, the overwhelming number of White voters who have year in and year out cast their votes for White candidates are doing so by blind faith.

You don't have to preach to the Black community about weighing the merits of a particular candidate simply because for so long because we didn't have any candidates who looked like us. So we had to look at the merits of their position and what they meant to us, And as far as Oprah adding a element to his campaign, SO THE FUCK WHAT. In case you don't know, Oprah's success didn't come from appealing only to a Black audience. There are an awful lot of White people who like Oprah.

Unbelievable, crabs in the basket, crabs in the basket.

SC was the only state he won in 2004.
According to some exit polls, he pulled in the most white male votes.
Hillary did quite poorly among males (any surprises?)

as soon as Oprah endorsed him. That's the truth. Let's face it. In some polls it shows that Oprah would WIN if she ran for President, so it doesn't surprise me that her endorsing Obame pushed him to the forefront.

Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 10:11 PM by WyldRogue
Oprah's endorsement did alot to help Obama but surprisingly, it was the over-whelming black vote that put it out of reach for Clinton and Edwards

An amazing 80 percent of black men and women cast strictly for Obama

What is amazing is that it was well proportionate amongst the white voters for all 3 candidates.

Now is someone going to tell me that RACE did not come into play?

Shame that it 'possibly' has come down to that sad fact

69. People are tired of the old crowd
And I say that as a contemporary of Sen. Clinton.

Folks are watching a poorly-run campaign full of gaffes and old electioneering tactics that aren't pretty. And full of smears or insinuations that shouldn't have any place in our Party. First of all, she and her manager should command her husband to stop dogging Obama - it's killing her. If she and her campaign doesn't have control, it signals a systemic problem and a leadership failure.

71. Hillary Clinton concedes race to Barack Obama
Source: Greenville Online

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton conceded the South Carolina Democratic primary to Sen. Barack Obama about an hour after the polls closed Saturday.

“I have called Sen. Obama to congratulate him and wish him well," Clinton said.

Obama routed Clinton in the racially charged South Carolina primary Saturday night, regaining campaign momentum in the prelude to a Feb. 5 coast-to-coast competition for more than 1,600 Democratic National Convention delegates, The Associated Press reported.

In her concession statement, Clinton said: "Thank you to the people of South Carolina who voted today and welcomed me into their homes over the last year. Your stories will stay with me well beyond this campaign and I am grateful for the support so many of you gave to me.

“We now turn our attention to the millions of Americans who will make their voices heard in Florida and the twenty-two states as well as American Samoa who will vote on February 5th."

Obama wins in SC, regaining momentum
By DAVID ESPO and CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writers
47 minutes ago

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Barack Obama routed Hillary Rodham Clinton in the racially charged South Carolina primary Saturday night, regaining campaign momentum in the prelude to a Feb. 5 coast-to-coast competition for more than 1,600 Democratic National Convention delegates.

"The choice in this election is not about regions or religions or genders," Obama said at a boisterous victory rally. "It's not about rich versus poor, young versus old and it's not about black versus white. It's about the past versus the future."

The audience chanted "Race doesn't matter" as it awaited Obama to make his appearance after rolling up 55 percent of the vote in a three-way race. But it did, in a primary that shattered turnout records.

About half the voters were black, according to polling place interviews, and four out of five of them supported Obama. Black women turned out in particularly large numbers. Obama, the first-term Illinois senator, got about a quarter of the white vote while Clinton and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina split the rest.

80. Do Something
Oh, been around before. I just get so sick and tired of these forums becoming battlegrounds for 2-3 people arguing some petty point, I have to take a break for a year or so. This year the goal is to take the White House AND retain control of Congress and if we can't do that than all the yackin' in the world is pointless. Get out there, DO SOMETHING, even if all you can do is convince your neighbor to vote for a Democratic Congressman...You've done your Job.

88. But WHAT, exactly?
Taking back the White House is all well and good, but look what taking back Congress did for us... EXACTLY! Not so fucking much!

Since we're deciding WHOM we want to take back the White House, don't you think it is worth a little "yackin'" to figure out WHAT we want them to DO when they get there???

Not just "something" but the RIGHT somethings? (Or, at least, more RIGHT somethings than PANDERING, SELL-OUT, SOUNDS-GOOD-BUT-DOESN'T-AMOUNT-TO-CRAP somethings?)

THAT is what, or should be what, all this "yackin" is about--and I sure as hell don't think it is pointless.

Because, after all this, if all we get is Bush-Lite, or some kind of DINO, then I don't think we'll really be patting ourselves on the back for how "nice" we were during the primary.

More like kicking ourselves in the ass for how STUPID we were.

DO something, indeed. Like convince your fellow Democrats not to vote for a freakin' American Idol winner, full of empty promises.

DO start using your head, Democrats, instead of your god-knows-what.

And NOBODY'S getting a freakin' PONY! GET A FREAKIN' GRIP!

Which formerly Democratic-In-Name-Only Senator from Connecticut was his mentor, after all???

Oh, yes, that's right. The one that has endorsed John Freakin' McCain for President!!!!!

Cleaning the corporatists out of the Democratic Party will, I'm sure, will be near the top of the agenda for a President Obama... :sarcasm: (In case there was any doubt. Can't be too careful these days.)

82. I don't think Obama can carry South Carolina in the general
election. I have spent a lot of time in South Carolina with close relatives and I think South Carolina is a Republican state.

I think that it's possible that Obama or any Dem could carry Virginia or Florida or Arkansas.

BUT the big thing for Obama is that this South Carolina win gives him a lot of momentum which should help a lot in the Feb 5 primaries.

If the ground swell continues and is reflected in the general election then Obama may not lose the south providing he gets the nod. It at least looks like people have taken an interest in their futures and are interested in seeing a change take place.

108. Excellent point and spot on...
I have been noticing when it comes to totals the Democratic turn out is 1/3 again the Repuke turnout... now that says alot... In fact it says that whoever the nominee for the Democratic ticket is is a favorite to win 56 percent of the national general vote... That is a landslide victory... along with the amount of Congressional seats we will win it will be a sure bet that the Democratic ticket can undo most of the damage that Bushco has caused.

because it totally repudiated Bill Clinton's charges that Obama was the black candidate. The media and the Clinton machine underestimated Obama's appeal among young voters regardless of race. The Obama coalition is bigger than Hillary's and can bring in more independents. That's why I think NY and NJ are in play for Obama.

. . .Obama also gained an endorsement from Caroline Kennedy, who likened the Illinois senator to her late father, President John F. Kennedy.

"I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them," she wrote on The New York Times op-ed page. "But for the first time, I believe I have found a man who could be that president — and not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans."
