Asia plummets as Wall Street takes tumble

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) --Asian markets plummeted Friday on a steep decline on Wall Street and mounting worries about the U.S. economy

The Nikkei 225 average tumbled 2.7% to 13,412.20, its lowest level since October, 2005, while the broader Topix index dropped 2.1% to 1,302.46.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 skidded 2.1% to 5,674.70, extending its declines into a 10th straight session, on heavy losses in miners such as Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton.

South Korea's Kospi gave up 1.9% to 1,690.85, New Zealand's NZX 50 index dropped 1.9% to 3,661.14 and Taiwan's Weighted index tumbled 2.3% to 7,911.91.
