FBI wants instant access to British identity data
Source: The Guardian

Senior British police officials are talking to the FBI about an international database to hunt for major criminals and terrorists.

The US-initiated programme, "Server in the Sky", would take cooperation between the police forces way beyond the current faxing of fingerprints across the Atlantic. Allies in the "war against terror" - the US, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand - have formed a working group, the International Information Consortium, to plan their strategy.

Biometric measurements, irises or palm prints as well as fingerprints, and other personal information are likely to be exchanged across the network. One section will feature the world's most wanted suspects. The database could hold details of millions of criminals and suspects.

The FBI is keen for the police forces of American allies to sign up to improve international security. The Home Office yesterday confirmed it was aware of Server in the Sky, as did the Metropolitan police.

3. Sounds like a plan...
Though I think we should consider holding out for a nice tax cut, or a symbolic border-fence on our vulnerable southern flanks, in exchange for our genetic data.

sounds like Skynet to me, next thing you know Arnold Schwarzenagger is going to come and blow you away. Perhaps he'll find a way to be president.

9. And why not?
I mean, the United States has shown itself to be oh-so-careful and responsible in handling suspect information. Just ask Brandon Mayfield, an attorney in Aloha, Oregon, who got an up close and personal look at just how the FBI operates when it comes to pursuing terrorist suspects.

This administration belongs behind bars, not in the business of putting people behind bars.

10. Oh how wonderful
Now it's not only our OWN government that can hoard our personal data, not to mention then losing it and doubtless leaving it where all the crooks can get it. Oh joy.

'Tom Bush, assistant director at the FBI's criminal justice information service, has said he hopes to see a pilot project for the programme up and running by the middle of the year.'

Tom Bush? Any relation?
