Anti-Bush Ad Contest Submits SuperBowl Commercial (CBS: unlikely to air)
WASHINGTON (AdAge.com) -- Liberal activist group MoveOn.org announced it has chosen an anti-President Bush ad to air ahead of next week's "State of the Union" address and said it is negotiating with CBS to gain airtime on the Super Bowl.

Mr. Fisher was not available for comment at the Copenhagen office. A spokeswoman for MoveOn said Mr. Fisher created the ad "on his own time." No further details about the production and post-production logistics were available.

Calls for comment to Leo Burnett USA's Chicago headquarters have not yet been returned.

A spokesman for CBS said the Viacom-owned network has received the request from MoveOn to run the ad in the Super Bowl, but added that the ad has to go through standards and practices before CBS will say if it can run an advocacy ad during the game. The spokesman said he didn't think it was likely that the spot would pass standards and practices.

1. CBS News Radio announced earlier today . . .
there are only 7 commercial slots remaining for the game -- the slots filled up very fast this year. This was part of the local station's regular business hour report, so only peripherally related to MoveOn's situation.

3. If This Is True, It Really Could Be The Beginning Of The End...
for us. Why run any political advertisements from the opposition at all? The right simply ponies up more dough or simply tells their cronies in the corporate media to refuse to air an ad period based on "standards and practices". Oh, how far we are falling.

6. Ah, so now we see it...

The corporate media and the corporatist politicians recycling money between themselves. Corporatists receive large sums for enhancing corporate power (codephrase: "American freedom") and corporations give those politicians preferential treatment in their media outlets because they "just have more ad money".

It's a self-reinforcing cycle resulting in political lock-out. This is one way that corporations and government can effectively merge, and it is becoming rather like Communism or Fascism.

4. Have fun with the lawsuit CBS
There is nothing about this ad that violates standards and practices. MoveOn will win, but not until months after the commercial is pulled.

22. I have a life.. don't need the Super Bowl.
It's usually a great time to get things done. The streets are deserted. Good time to grocery shop. I'd be happy to boycott the whole damn game, and the advertisers, if that's what it took. If I actually watched CBS (or any of the broadcast channels) I'd boycott their asses too! Unless they own FoodNetwork, HGTV, or PBS, I'm okay.

24. Not a boycott as such.

I think a letter writing campaign to the advertisers threatening to boycott THEM will have more effect.

8. if they don't run this commercial
we need to organize and make a big issue out of being shut out by the corporate media. Who can we contact at CBS to let them know we want to see that ad on during the superbowl? Does anyone have a link or an address?

23. I went almost t.v. free for the past 6 years.. don't miss it!
I watch, maybe, 3 hours of t.v. a month. Mostly cooking shows, or the Daily Show. Our t.v. is never on. My 12 year old daughter doesn't miss it... We have so much time to read, write, make art, create music, and TALK to each other. Her friends love coming to our house because we talk and laugh and get along great. There is no t.v. soundtrack to our lives. You'd be amazed at the creativity and peace that will ensue. I can't stomach the lies, and the dumbing down of America, so I don't go NEAR anything but Iron Chef, Daily News, etc.. Try it!

14. A not so modest proposal..
Question: How much does it cost to sponsor a sitcom per episode?

The proposal: Write a half-hour sitcom. Make it funny, irreverent, but clean, and broadcast it live (on the east coast, tape delayed out west). Offer to purchase all of the commercial time in advance, the way TV was done during the Golden Age. Sub out some of the commercial time to worthy buyers to help recoup costs. Limit commercial breaks to three three minutes blocks, just like in the old days.

People like sitcoms, a lot more than they like reality TV. A good one will undoubtedly soar to number one in the ratings by default. If the Big Four won't bite, I bet UPN or WB would.

Now, since MoveOn controls the entire half-hour, they can do as they damn well please with it. The question is, will it float?

15. Money better spent elsewhere anyway...
I hope that the strategy was NOT to air the ad at that time slot in any event. It's too expensive relative to other needed work in specific regions, in my opinion. However, this all has been good press for MoveOn, and I hope that it continues to grow.

This is the second piece they have pulled because of its "liberal slant".
