HIV BREAKTHROUGH: 270 Proteins that Could Halt the Virus Detected
Source: Washington Post

A research team announced yesterday that it has identified about 270 human proteins that the AIDS virus apparently needs to infect a person, instantly providing researchers with dozens of new strategies for blocking or aborting HIV infection.

The vast majority -- more than 200 -- were not previously known to play a role in the complicated choreography by which the virus attaches to a cell, enters it, gets copied and establishes permanent residence.

...

"This is likely destined to be one of the best papers on HIV for this coming decade," said Robert C. Gallo, co-discoverer of the AIDS virus, who was not involved in the study. "I think it is terrific."

Anthony S. Fauci, an AIDS researcher and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the study "puts on the table many, many more processes that up to this point were unrecognized." He added quickly: "Now they have their work ahead of them."

Sorry to say I didn't know about the backstory re: Gallo. Thanks for the heads-up.

Still, I think this is an amazing discovery. Hope you got to read the whole article.

10. Yes, the "complicated choreography" of something that's never been
isolated cheered on by a former public employee who was in the position to invent this whole scenario AND profit off of every single tested lemming.

In other news, a government-sponsored research team has discovered 200 previously unknown ways to secure the electronic voting machine. Being that the team was sponsored by the government they were not permitted to look at voting systems that were as verifiable as those that use paper ballots. The discovery was considered "terrific" by Diebold/Premier and its stockholders, saying "it is likely destined to be one of the best research studies on voting machinery in this decade." The results were also applauded by ES&S and Sequoia, who said, "Now they have their work ahead of them".

Oh, the medical industry wouldn't do that. That's right, they care more about people and their health than profits. Silly me, I thought we lived in a capitalistic society...

Now if they could just find what causes RVWHUA syndrome (Republicans Voting with Head Up Ass), a lot more misery could be relieved.

12. This is excelent
Not just as a means to develop new high-leverage points to attack HIV, but I wonder if what is learned here can be used to attack other viral diseases.
