Marion Jones Sentenced to Six Months in Prison
Source: New York Times

WHITE PLAINS — Marion Jones, the track and field star who pled guilty in October to lying to federal agents about her use of performance-enhancing drugs and her connection to a check-fraud case, was sentenced to six months in prison at the United States District Court here on Friday.

The federal sentencing guidelines recommended Jones face anywhere from zero to six months in prison for her offenses. The maximum she could have faced was five years.

In court filings leading up to the sentencing, prosecutors asked United States District Judge Kenneth M. Karras to give Jones six months in prison; Jones’s lawyers said probation was enough.

At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Jones won three gold and two bronze medals, and until her admission about her drug use in Oct., had publicly insisted she never used performance-enhancing drugs.

9. The question is: how much was talent and how much was roids?
That's the problem with athletes who dope.

2. She deserves it, but so do the big baseball roiders, etc.
Unlike most of them, I honestly do think she's sorry she ever did it, and not just because she was caught.

6. It's probably the check-fraud ties that are sending her to the crowbar hotel. nt

16. That's my guess
If it wasn't for the check fraud she probably would have been on probation.

7. Ms Jones knew what she was doing and tried to hide the fact.
No doubt about it! She is definitely sorry I'm sure.

I have more compassion for her than I do the 'Rocket' (Roger Clements) but that's another story for another time.

4. She is national icon like Martha Stewart-who go 6 months for lying to Feds. some would
say they have to make an example of her. Prob.they did.
For me--probation would be enough. Too much prison mentality here in the US.

I don't think prison is necessary -- she has lost everything already.

11. Interesting read .. America and Drugs

America's Love-Hate Relationship with Drugs

Many prescription drugs have effects similar to those of illegal drugs. But we still view some users as criminals -- the others as patients.

...

"Historians of the future will wonder how a people possessed of such a deep faith in the power of drugs also found themselves fighting a war against certain other drugs with not-dissimilar powers. ... We hate drugs. We love drugs. Or could it be that we hate the fact that we love drugs?"

21. So she gets 6 months, out in 3
The interesting or sad part in all this is that she obviously had great talent and may have won without the roids. The other sad thing is that I don't think the lesson is getting through. The lesson not to use performance enhancers. The object seems to be to make them less detectable like HGH instead of ridding the sports world of this stuff. There is so much money to be made in sports these days that I don't think cases like this or Clemens, Bonds, etc will make any difference at all. The lure to make a mediocre player good and a player past his/her prime to extend the career seems to be too tempting. I honestly don't know what the answer is at this point. People know the health risks and yet usage of this stuff seems to be growing.

26. She deserves every thing she's got comming to her...
SHE knew what SHE did and LIED about it...and also TRASHED the reputation of her RELAY TEAMMATES...

SHE has only HERSELF to blame for HER idiotic and INEXCUSABLE behavior...

While comparing her to Libby is entertaining and interesting, it does nothing to LESSEN what SHE HERSELF DID TO HERSELF or lessen the fucking behavior...
