Pat Robertson says his attorneys are looking into bid for The Virginian-Pilot
Source: The Virginian-Pilot

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson, who has sharply criticized The Virginian-Pilot in the past, is considering making a bid to buy the newspaper, an associate said Thursday.

Landmark Communications Inc., a Norfolk-based media company, announced last week that it was evaluating whether to sell all of its assets, including The Weather Channel and The Pilot.

"Although the price for The Weather Channel is a little rich for my blood, I am considering a potential bid for the Pilot and have asked my attorneys to look into it," Robertson said in an e-mail forwarded by his personal assistant, G.G. Conklin. "It would be particularly helpful to provide internships for Regent University journalism students."

... Robertson is the first investor to announce that he might seek to acquire The Pilot.

... He offered $6 million for the struggling United Press International news service in 1992 but dropped the bid a month later, saying it would cost too much to keep UPI in business.

2. That's funny because
I'm so old that I thought you were referring to the old "The Virginian" TV show and that he wanted to buy the pilot. I believe it was James Drury and Doug McClure for 90 minutes each episode.

3. Great, if Pat gets the Weather Channel
Then anytime a hurricane hits the gay-friendlier parts of Florida, the forecasters will say things like, "The Class 4 Act of God Against the Sodomites that we've been monitoring made landfall today..."

8. Murdoch is buying The Weather Channel. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
He wants it because they have an infrastructure Murdoch can use to send local Fox "news" to every cable head-end in the country targeted by zipcode.

6. Pat wants to be the new Rev. Moon..
will this be a tax-free transaction? I'd dearly love to know how many millions if not billions Pat has ripped off from Virginia taxpayers over the years.

9. The pilot has seriously investigated Roberts
"Robertson has also been accused of using his tax-exempt, nonprofit organization, Operation Blessing, as a front for his own financial gain, and then using his influence in the Republican Party to cover his tracks.

After making emotional pleas in 1994 on The 700 Club for cash donations to Operation Blessing to support airlifts of refugees from Rwanda to Zaire,

it was later discovered, by a reporter from The Virginian-Pilot,

that Operation Blessing's planes were transporting diamond-mining equipment for the Robertson-owned African Development Corporation, a venture Robertson had established in cooperation with Zaire's dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko, whom Robertson had befriended earlier in 1993.

According to Operation Blessing documents, Robertson personally owned the planes used for Operation Blessing airlifts."

10. Charles Taylor is good friend of Robertson and is at the Hague
fighting for his life. Shouldn't Pat Robertson be at the Hague also?
