US to Unveil Key License Rules Friday (Real ID)
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans born after Dec. 1, 1964, will have to get more secure driver's licenses in the next six years under ambitious post-9/11 security rules to be unveiled Friday by federal officials.

The Homeland Security Department has spent years crafting the final regulations for the REAL ID Act, a law designed to make it harder for terrorists, illegal immigrants and con artists to get government-issued identification. The effort once envisioned to take effect in 2008 has been pushed back in the hopes of winning over skeptical state officials.

Even with more time, more federal help, and technical advances, REAL ID still faces stiff opposition from civil liberties groups.

... By 2014, anyone seeking to board an airplane or enter a federal building would have to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, with the notable exception of those more than 50 years old, Homeland Security officials said.

8. You're on the right track
By making this exclusion, it helps undermine political opposition to the plan.

Those under 50 in 2014 had their value system developed primarily in the late 70's and later, and they will be far more likely to "go along" with totalitarian rule. A lot of people over 50 won't bother to resist the plan because, of course, it apparently won't apply to them at all.

Plus, note how they're planning the release of the details for another Friday news Dump.

9. That's right. It's an attempt to capitalize on the differing expectations of privacy.
The over 50s will resist but too few under 50s will understand why they are so opposed to it.

6. My new question for the dem pres. contenders is.....
Since the power word of 08 pres run seems to be CHANGE, will any of them CHANGE the name 'Homeland' to something with less of a Nazi feel to it?

How many of Bush's policies will the candidates vow to CHANGE when they become President?
I want to know that each contender is determined to restore policy according to the
Constitution. I would like them to speak about this subject..identifying each destructive change Bush has created, and how they plan to give us back our Nation and our personal dignities.

The word 'Homeland' has got to be CHANGED.

Which one will CHANGE this?

10. The whole Dept needs to be scrapped...
While I agree that certain aspects of government need to talk to each other, the idea that putting them all under the direction of one clown is absurd.

Communication is one thing, collusion is something else entirely. BTW, Adm (Retired) Poindexter needs to be tossed out on his ear, locked up for treason and placed in irons.

14. Neo-cons have that uncanny ability to make the criminal look
like it's legit. They are experts at setting up a fall guy and deflecting responsibility whenever they get caught w/their pants down.

For starters, they have no respect for the laws of the nation, and certainly no dedication to the Constitution...and they arrive at this point by believing they are superior to everyone else...no one else can see the "City on the Hill", so they have to shepard people to the vision. It is a sham, because their vision of society is a hallucination. They want order, but only on their own terms, and the rights of others mean nothing to them. If you are not one that will be "guided", you are the enemy. Even if the country must be torn down, they refuse to accept that their vision of the future is flawed to the point of creating a society of dumbed down automatons, always seeking out an enemy to justify the "fear" they feel that the nation must live under to remain "free". As long as it is their version of "freedom". They exist by purveying unfounded fear upon people who rarely challenge them, and when challenges arise, they are surprisingly quick to trample it down. But they cannot exist without a willing coalition of people who think they will gain from the "trickle down" of power...something that will never come about as long as these people are in power. They will never relinquish power, it has to be taken from them, and they need to be exposed as the totalitarians they are.

What they want is a cross between a form of Royalty and Dark Ages feudal Europe. A few "elites" ruling over those that would do little more than amass riches for the few at the top.

15. Wow, I miss this by a few months. Unbelievable.
The boomers (and while I fall in to that demo I know I'm really not, the last 5 or so years of the 'boomers' were not really part of the defining moments) get a free pass.

It's got to be an economics based decision...

20. Chertoff to Announce National ID Standards (REAL ID)
Source: ABC

REAL ID Program Has Drawn Criticism From States, Privacy Groups

Following 9/11 commission recommendations aimed at rooting out potential terrorists, driver's license rules and procedures will be standardized across all 50 states, the Department of Homeland Security will announce today.

But the new plan is likely to anger many -- from states who will have to implement the costly changes to civil rights groups who charge the changes will invade individuals' privacy and make them more vulnerable to identity theft.

The program, called REAL ID, will require states to demand certain standards for individuals obtaining driver's licenses, including proof of citizenship and residency, instead of the typical date of birth and Social Security number.

U.S. citizens born after Dec. 1, 1964 will have to comply with the new guidelines by 2014. Individuals over the age of 50 would not have to comply, an exception designed to help states transition into the new plan.

28. They keep having to shift it because they have a fight on their hands
States and governors have been standing up to them against it, so they keep trying to shift it and shove it through as quickly as they can.

ACLU has a great site on it called "Real Nightmare"

Here's their section on "Status of Anti-Real ID Legislation in the States"
