US troop levels at Shannon hit 262,000

A surge in US troop traffic in the second half of last year resulted in over a quarter of a million soldiers using Shannon Airport in 2007.


According to figures released yesterday by the Shannon Airport Authority (SAA), a total of 262,816 US troops passed through last year.

However, this was a 7pc drop on the 280,785 who used the airport's facilities in 2006.

Last year, the number of US troops using Shannon as a stop-off passed the one million mark since the US war started in Iraq in 2003.
