Honore: Nation hasn't learned from disaster
Source: Times Picayune, New Orleans

The gruff, cigar-chomping general who led federal troops in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is convinced that the United States hasn't learned its lesson from the storm.

As Lt. Gen. Russel Honore prepares to retire from the Army and hand over his command Friday, he says he wants to spend the rest of his life creating a "culture of preparedness" to prevent another post-disaster disaster.

"There's an attitude everywhere else that people are smarter than they are in New Orleans and in Mississippi. They're not"

1. He's right. We haven't learned and people in other
locations do think they're smarter and less exposed to disaster than New Orleanians and Mississippians.

2. Well, I hope his message has an impact on the public
Although having a cigar smoker tell me how to prepare for the future seems rather contradictory. My philosophy is to avoid disease and disability.

3. K&R. I've witnessed that attitude first-hand too often after moving
back to Houston in 2005.

5. All those inlets on Fire Island, Jones Beach and out in the Hamptons were not cut by bulldozers!
A 5 Hurricane barrelling straight for Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn would be a disaster unseen in the US since Katrina.

8. or if La Cumbre Vieja erupts and sends billions of tons of rock into the Atlantic...
That would be the largest tsunami ever.

And it would wipe out our eastern seaboard.

No, not likely to happen tomorrow, but not impossible either.

6. The General is RIGHT! I'm sick of the self-congratulation...
... that reigns in areas that haven't faced anything comparable to Katrina.

And aside from its being obnoxious, that attitude always makes me nervous, because it seems like tempting fate. You know, "pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall...".

Or something like that.

:scared:

7. Much deeper than that
The US hasn't learned anything from the events of the past 30+ years.

9. It seems as if you are the only people in the developed who don't believe

you deserve a free national health service.

However, I'm not at all sure that these results have not been fixed. NH has traditionally been a traditional Republican stronghold, so it makes sense that Hillary would do better there than in other states. Which, as I intimated, nevertheless, may not mean very much in terms of the way in which the overall results seem likely to have been rigged via the machines.

Think how much the Republicans have to lose if a Democrat who is not their lapdog is elected President. Many of the highest ranking face the threat of criminal prosecution and imprisonment - quite apart from any financial considerations. They've got away with wholesale fraud the last twice... It's easier for them to believe they are on a roll than that they should suddenly find an honest election an attractive proposition.
