Bill Bradley to Back Barack Obama

January 05, 2008 11:54 PM

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: Former Sen. Bill Bradley will endorse Sen. Barack Obama in New Hampshire on Monday, ABC News has learned.

A source close to the senator said that he has waited until now to endorse because he wanted to give former Sen. John Edwards a shot in Iowa first.

Bradley is a former Democratic senator from New Jersey and ran for his party's nomination in 2000, losing to former Vice President Al Gore.

A high-level Obama campaign staffer confirmed the endorsement late Saturday night on the condition of anonymity.

1. Wow, the loser of 2000 endorses Obama. Not a good omen for Barack.

11. Back in 2000, Bradley was the progressive challenger to Gore
People forget that the Al Gore we love so much today, was not the Al Gore of 1990s.

13. Exactly! Thanks for the reminder
Gore was the DLC guy, the safe choice, the party choice. Bradley was the outsider in that one.

I think Bill Bradley is a really smart and dedicated guy. I happily supported him back then, much as I love Al Gore now.

4. And although he's a former Senator from New Jersey
he's basically a New Yorker. That has to hurt.

14. Oh c'mon
"basically a New Yorker"?

Can't New Jersey keep anything of its own? (As the husband watches the "NY" Giants upstairs. *NY* my ass!)

17. He lived in Denville, NJ, then in Montclair NJ
going back into the 1970s or 1980s.

An interesting story told to me by a local Democratic leader is that Bradley opted to run for Senate, rather than a lower local office first, because he correctly realized that it was possible with his name recognition to win the state, but not his then home county - very Republican Morris County.

3. Bradley Could Drive The Lane Too
Maybe it's because I remember him as a basketball player that supported black players. Maybe it's because he spoke at my college graduation. Maybe it's because I'm an Obama supporter.

But I think the endorsement is great. Maybe Clinton doesn't have it all wrapped up?

5. As it was said in 2000:
Bill Bradley has showered with more black guys than George Bush has shaken hands with. :P

8. Maybe it will help Obama in New Jersey
Much of the NJ Democrat establishment is signed up for Clinton.

This should help Obama carry NJ on Feb 5.

9. Bradley to endorse Obama for president
Source: AP

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Bill Bradley, a former presidential hopeful and senator, planned to endorse Barack Obama for president on Sunday, aides said.

Bradley, a hall of fame professional basketball player, will campaign on Monday for Obama, Obama aides told The Associated Press.

"Barack Obama is building a broad new coalition that brings together Democrats, independents and Republicans by once again making idealism a central focus of our politics," Bradley said in a release scheduled to be released on Sunday.

"Because of his enormous appeal to Americans of all ages and backgrounds, Obama is the candidate best positioned to win in November. ... His movement for change could create a new era of American politics — truly a new American story."

10. Appeal Does Not a President Make.
Being President isn't like being Queen of England, a figurehead out for show. You have to have some competence in actually running a complex coordinated social group...

15. I suppose it's too late for Gore now ...

Though I think it would be great if Gore would endorse Edwards.
