Edwards rebukes Clinton in Democratic debate
By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Democrat Hillary Clinton, attempting to slow Barack Obama's surging campaign, went on the attack on Saturday and drew a sharp rebuke from John Edwards for defending the status quo. In a combative debate three days before a too-close-to-call New Hampshire primary, Clinton questioned Obama's health-care plan and cast doubt on his ability to deliver on his calls for change in Washington.

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator, upbraided the New York senator for criticizing Obama and noted her third-place finish in Iowa on Thursday, when Obama captured the first big prize of the presidential campaign and Edwards finished second.

"I didn't hear these kinds of attacks from Senator Clinton when she was ahead," Edwards said. "Every time he speaks out for change, every time I fight for change, the forces of status quo are going to attack -- every single time."

New Hampshire is the next battleground in the state-by-state fight to pick a successor to President George W Bush, and Clinton, seeking to become the first female president, faces a potential do-or-die struggle to revitalize her struggling campaign.

1. I was very impressed with Edwards response....told it like it is
He could have ganged up on Obama, but instead he saw Hillary for what she is and called her out on it.

I suspect Edwards is trying to make it a two person race, between him and Obama. I hope he succeeds.

4. When the media tries to control who people vote for, sometimes...
it pushes people to show even more support for their candidate if they fell the media is trying to shut them out. First it was Gravel, then Kucinich and now Edwards. It happens.

14. most people here
love Al Gore and Dennis Kucinich, and any progessive candidate, since John has a GREAT message, and is seriously in this to win, he get s a TON of attention on DU. Obama next, then Hillary last. I'm not sure why the very experience, yet uninspiring Richardson stayed in it, he was really outmatched tonight in his ability to sound like a great leader. The other 3 did far better than he did, as usual. Any reason why he stayed with such low poll numbers and money, anyone? I felt Biden should have been there instead of Bill.

16. Why Is There? Hey Buddy That Would Be Why Are There.
Maybe because we care about truth. He is speaking it. Got a problem with that? Bone up on your grammar while you are at it.

21. There isn't.. But IF there were
...it might be because Edwards has the most thought out and progressive platform (especially on health care) and would make a great president.

5. I thought Edwards did well.
He was polite yet forceful. He was unflinching in his answers and right on message. If you listened to him address each topic, he left you with no doubt how he stood on it!
They were all good, but Hillary let frustration (or maybe it was desperation!) slip past her facade of composure a time or two when such emotion wasn't really called for. You can read between the lines that she's thinking "With my last name and 8 years living in the White House - I'M the heir appearant!" Sorry Charlie! Star-kissed want's tuna with good tastes!

15. I don't think so
What Hillary said about Obama is in there, and so is John's response. It is a factual recording of what occurred.

Reuters is pretty good, though. Not a U.S. organization, of course.

20. I too have become more hopeful
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 08:04 AM by Android3.14
As it seemed more and more that Democrats were going to allow the powers-that-be to foist HRC onto us despite the overwhelming evidence that her lackluster support was superceded only by the overt antagonism of half of her own party, I was losing hope that the country would ever recover something that resembled a democracy. I could only see a contest between an easily manipulated Republican and the most hated woman on the continent.

Now I it seems as if there is a chance the nomination may narrow down to a contest between Obama and Edwards, and that seems like a choice between pretty good and fan-freaking-tastic.

Especially when it looks like the competitors are going to be either Mitt "Ken Doll" Romney or the Huckster.
