WASHINGTON – An attack ad that Mike Huckabee promised never to air ran three times in Iowa on New Year's Eve, according to a tracking agency.

The television spot, which calls Republican rival Mitt Romney "dishonest" for airing ads that distort Huckabee's record, ran in the afternoon in Davenport, at dinnertime in Cedar Rapids and during a 9 p.m. newscast in Davenport, according to the Campaign Media Analysis Group.

The on-again, off-again ad has been at the center of one of the oddest events in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses.

A spokeswoman for Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor, did not immediately return a call yesterday evening seeking comment.

to tell the journalists attending that he wouldn't run the ad? And then he ran it at the press conference to 'prove' to them that he had such an ad?

The Republicans I know are in deep pain that they have no viable candidate. Hopefully the powers that be do not install this maniac in the WH or all is lost.

However by showing the ad at the press conference, he effectively ran the ad by ensuring that the media would run the ad FOR him. The youtube.com video of this particular ad has received over 100,000 views.

Basically this ad ran for FREE.

What a fruitcake, I almost hope he is the republican nominee. As scary an idea as his being president, I just don't see him winning in 2008...I think your average american will be as scared of him as the rest of us.
