U.S. sailors found dead in Ghanaian hotel room

DAKAR (Reuters) - Two U.S. Navy sailors were found dead on Tuesday in their hotel room while on shore leave in the West African country of Ghana, the U.S. Navy said in a statement.


The cause of death was unknown and was being investigated by Ghanaian authorities in cooperation with U.S. Navy officials, the statement said.

Both sailors were stationed aboard the Fort McHenry, a dock landing ship conducting a port visit to Ghana as part of a U.S. naval partnership program in West Africa.

The Fort McHenry, a 600-foot ship based in Little Creek, Virginia, is on a six-month mission to train West African navies to fight drug smuggling and maritime security threats in a region which supplies nearly a fifth of U.S. oil imports.

Ghana was the first sub-Saharan British African colony to gain independence. Now it could become our first official sub-Saharan African colony.

Does Ghana have oil? I can't remember.
