DES MOINES, IOWA --John Edwards has clawed his way into contention to win Iowa's caucuses on Thursday in the first vote for the Democratic presidential nomination, gaining strength as rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have lost ground, according to a new McClatchy-MSNBC poll.

Mitt Romney has regained the lead among Iowa Republicans as Mike Huckabee has lost momentum and support, even among the evangelical Christians who had propelled him into the top spot just weeks ago.

Taken together, this first poll in Iowa since campaigning resumed after a Christmas break showed a dead heat among the three leading Democratic candidates and a volatile clash between the two top Republican rivals there.

"On the Democratic side, the race is about as close as it can get, but keep an eye on Edwards," said Brad Coker of Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, which conducted the survey. "Edwards has really moved up since our last poll. Obama and Clinton have each slipped a little bit."

The new survey, taken Dec. 26-28, came three weeks after the initial Dec. 3-6 poll.

And who can go more negative than a trial lawyer?

8. The shoe definitely fits in Sen. Clinton's case.
I like Obama and feel he'd make a great President, but my support goes to a guy who's spent his adult life taking on and defeating the vampire capitalists. Go John Edwards!

15. I didn't imply that.
Edwards' campaign -- possibly just because he's running in third -- has NOT been all about attacking the other candidates. He's been talking about issues.

I was replying to some dork who falsely claimed that Edwards had been running a negative campaign.

Hillary's message: I have experience, so vote for me.
Obama's message: I'm really good at making Republicans like me.
Edwards' message: I want to stop poor people from getting screwed over.

18. no, you didn't imply it
Edwards did/does.

Now whether that constitutes negative campaigning or not is arguable. Personally, I think it's the pot calling the kettle black, but doesn't rise to the level of say, the John Kerry Swift Boat fiasco, which is negative campaigning by any standard.

16. The MSM and their corporate masters will shit their pants...
when Edwards gets the nomination.

It's just an event they are in no way prepared for, after investing all of their time and money on trying to sell Dems on a Clinton candidacy.

...but yes, I'd go for Edwards/Obama. That would pretty much pain the White House Blue for 16 years I think.

12. my response
1) apologies don't cut it, and they don't make him any the less responsible for co-sponsoring the IWR.

2) He's made a lot: Yucca Mountain, The International Criminal Court, Bankruptcy legislation, Fortress- just to name a few

3)no evidence beyond his rhetoric that he's learned from his mistakes. He may have or he may not.

4)can be attacked for doing a 180 on his Senate career, his investing in and working for a hedge fund with offshore accounts, and the initial reason he gave to Forbes magazine that he went to work at Fortress: to learn about poverty. There's plenty more for the pukes to attack him on.

5)I agree. I think he's been pretty consistent about labor.

6)I don't vote for someone because of their spouse. Neither do most people.

7) :eyes:

8)Polls a year out mean exactly nothing. Plus he took matching funds. The pukes will outspend him 10 to 1 until after the convention.

9) So does Barak Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd.

10) The absurd claim that Clinton is repuke light, is just ignorant. I don't like her. She's not my candidate, but there's not a single repuke in the Senate who has anything close to her liberal voting record.
